MY TOP 10 HOLLYWOOD MOVIES OF EVERY YEAR 1940-1999

Post by RetroRobot »

Recently finished this mammoth task of a list that I started working on in the 90's!!! Jeebuz... well, it's been revised and updated through the years, but now I think it's as close to complete as it will ever be. I will obviously continue to watch movies from all decades so I guess it could change at any time, but right now, these are my faves. No blurbs this time.... it's just too damn time consuming.

The first 25 years reads like my Dad's DVD collection.

Have you seen Phantom Lady (1944)?
Saw that recently and liked it.

I might have a go at the 80s and 90s myself sometime...

Your dad has great taste :)

I have not seen Phantom Lady, but I am aware of it being a solid noir. Oh man, so many flicks, so little time.

Yeah, the 80's and 90's were both the easiest and the hardest for me. Tons of awesome films to pick from, but with that, also a lot of great ones that didn't make the cut. I would love to see your list.

It's funny, I use to think that the 50's were the least interesting period in Hollywood history, but actually, I think the 60's earns that distinction.

I've seen plenty of films made from the 30s to the 70s, but, crucially, not enough to do fair top ten lists. I've missed out on too many 'classics'. But for the record I'm a fan of Bogart and Cagney.

I've seen enough of the 80s and 90s to have a go at them. I'll start a shortlist tomorrow and see where I get. :)

Looking forward to seeing your picks.

True, Sam.... even though the 80's is my fave decade of cinema, there's no denying the abundance of bonafide classics to come out of the 70's. One of the most influential periods in filmmaking for sure. And that goes for Hollywood as well as Europe and Asia.

The fun thing about these lists is that it gives me an idea of future watches. I should note which ones I have not seen yet (at least to myself.) Ha in 1976 I'm only missing KING KONG and TORRID ZONE for 1940. I'm almost done with MAN HUNT (started last night so I will have another check soon.)

Retro are you more interested in a top Hollywood per year from me or top 10 films per year from me?

Good to see such films as The Pink Panther Strikes Again (one of my favorite films of all-time) as well as DEMETRIUS AND THE GLADIATORS which does not always get much love (like with THE ARRIVAL which I think is underrated).

I feel Hollywood has good material from 20s on (now it does get a little fuzzy in the 20s what is independent and what is Hollywood; same goes for confusing some UK films with Hollywood later on.)

You haven't seen the '76 King Kong??? For shame :)

Aah yes, Torrid Zone.... a sweaty Cagney on the Warner backlot posing as the tropics. I guess if they actually had shot on location his white Irish ass would have burst into flames :rage: If you ever see the old Warner gag reels, there's a really fun one with Cagney flubbing his lines to the point of anger from that film.

Whatever list you wanna do is fine with me. Though if you could match mine with your own picks, it would be cool to compare and contrast. Im sure yours will have less schlock and cheese on it.... or will it?? :)

For this version of the list I only picked Hollywood production or co-productions (Blow-up for instance). My old version of the list had Hammer films and the man with no name trilogy on it among others. But I wanted to do a straight HLWD list. Whether one or two independent productions slipped by me here, im not sure. But I think it's 99,9% tinsel town.

Oh Yeah you would win that bet. The problem with some of the UK productions is that they tend to be coproductions and it gets a little confusing at some points. Plus I want to include Powell & Pressburger :D (I'll think about taking some of the more English ones off.) I am going to do a decade at a time (or year at a time :D.) I'll try to post one update today.

Plenty I haven't seen of yours, but quite a few I have. So far, not as many in common as I would have guessed, but hey... that just makes it more interesting. Plenty of titles to check out.

I did not want you to hold your comments, because I do not know how busy I'll get before I can finish it :D.

Now clearly there are many of yours so far I want to see. Some I have, some I have on wish lists and some I have not even thought of. Picks like Sahara I will get to sooner than later. Picks like The Mask of Dimitrios I will eventually get the MOD. Ones like Ministry of Fear I should already have :D since it is on Criterion. I'm not that far along in the Tarzan films (since I only saw a few in the 30s) so it will a long time before I get to those.

But I am a fan of Bogart, Cagney, Hitchcock etc. so far I understand most of your picks. Heck I was close to picking some of the Hitchcocks, but I will have more Hitchcock later.

As you see for 40s horror I tend to prefer Val Lewton over the Universal horror. Now when you see my 30s list, you will see it dominated by Universal horror.

I need to see more 30's flicks before I can include it on the list.... but i'll get there eventually.

I should have included Shadow of a Doubt for '43 instead of Son of Dracula.... that was a bit of a misstep. Maybe there will be more.

I thought for sure you would have seen Postman Always Rings Twice, a noir classic if ever there was one (though it certainly has its detractors).

If I allowed UK productions on my list, Oliver Twist would most def be on there for '48.

Rope, as an excercise in filmmaking is interesting, as a piece of entertainment... I didn't like it.

And as you can probably tell from my list, im not a Western fan, which is where we differ the most in taste I guess. I like some Spaghetti Westerns and a few of the later Eastwood flicks but that's it.

Yeah I need to see Postman Always Rings Twice it as soon as I can. If I had it I would watch it ASAP (though Kiss of Death I actually want to watch more.) I'm missing several film noirs on your list. I have several of the Flynn films you have mentioned so I can get to those sooner than later.

I finished Man Hunt last night. Fine film, and I generally like Fritz Lang so I was not surprised. Strong effective psychological beginning.

Rope has stuck with me. I like the idea and the technical aspects a lot. It's creepy and effective and the performances are well done. I do wonder how the film would have been with either Cary Grant or Montgomery Clift (though when Hitchcock did finally work with Clift in I Confess it was a clash of styles.)

I was on a hard noir kick a few years back, where I bought like 50 or so titles within a few months. Many from the Fox Film Noir series of dvds, most of which had commentaries and some nice docs on them. I burnt out before I got through em' all, so there's undoubtedly more gold on the horizon within those stacks.

I should probably check out Rope again... it has been a while since I saw it.

Wow, we had more in common in the first half of 50's than we did in the 40's, I think. Wouldn't have thought.

Lavender Hill Mob would probably have made my list if UK productions were allowed. Nice to see you also have The Sniper on. Very underrated flick.

The 60's were the hardest for me. Looking forward to see what you come up with there.

Btw, if you ever see Secret of the Incas, you can really see where Indiana Jones came from, along with other inspirations of course. When I initially started researching the influences on the Indy flicks, I was quite surprised to find how little original material Spielberg and Lucas actually came up with. I knew it was an homage to the matineé serials and pastiche filmmaking overall, but not to that degree. We're talking Tarantino proportions, which I did not expect. Still love the movies though.

Yeah I saw that as well. You'll notice a mix of westerns and musicals in both 40s and 50s. Both of those will peter out later on (especially musicals, my favorites tend to be from 40s and 50s.) I knew I would repeat some directors like Hitchcock, Ford, Huston, Mann but some others surprised me as well. But you will also notice some themes/collections/eras will dominate like Val Lewton horrors of the 40s, Abbott and Costello, Universal horror in the 30s (when I do this), Buster Keaton in the 20s and some surprises when I do the later lists.

I like psychological noir films like The Sniper with lots of Freudian imagery :). Saw that not too long ago so it is still fresh in my memory. Kind of a surprise ending (still under the Hays code so not a complete surprise, but I like when they take that route -- I'm being vague for others so I will not spoil anything.)

I am trying to limit the UK productions, but a few of those like Lavender Hill Mob I really like and since I might create some other lists with these movies I keep the year by the film if I want to modify my top 100 or top 300 I can just move then without having to add information (same with having the director mentioned).

I'll add Secret of the Incas to my wish list then. I'll work in some of the film noir over the next few months since I own several of them.
