DVDs you have avoided upgrading to Blu Ray...

Post by Markgway »

...not because the film isn't worth it, but because the Blu Ray is substandard in some way (ie. it's cut, missing original audio, inferior image, etc...)

Here's mine (so far):

Casino Royale - UK and US editions are cut, uncut version too expensive to import, thus I've kept my uncut R3 2-disc DVD.

Dawn of the Dead - Was all set to replace my Anchor Bay UE 4-disc set with Arrow's 3-disc BD/DVD combo... until they left off the mono tracks. Oops. I've thought about going for ABE's theatrical only cut in the interim, but never bit.

Death Sentence - EIV's BD is 1080i. Oh dear. No reason to ditch my DVD.

Die Hard 4.0 - Worlwide Fox used the PG-13 cut as their BD basis. Why? When they made such a big deal about the DVD being 'unrated'.

Dressed to Kill - MGM dropped the mono track - and the ball. Criterion, are you interested? The R1 SE stays on my shelf.

Robocop - Subpar image and no extras. Pass. 20th anniversary steelbook wins.

Scream - R-rated cut only? No thanks, Lionsgate. Keeping my uncut German DVD.

The Terminator - Another MGM mono drop. WTF? When's that loooong awaied SE coming out? R1 SE DVD stays put.

Plus most anything by Fortune Star...

Terminator 2: Judgment Day - I'm waiting for James Cameron to do a proper remaster of this instead of the latest DNR'd version and the previous Optimum.

Total Recall - My steelbook version is nice enough, no need to get the Optimum.

The Big Lebowski - The BD is DNR'd so I'll stick with my DVD.

A Tale of Two Sisters - Sold the BD because it was 1080i and barely better than an upscale, sticking with my HK DVD until something better comes along.

Kuroneko - I'm unsure whether to upgrade to the Criterion BD because my DVD is a lovely MoC release.

The australian Casino Royale BD can be had for around £10 delivered can it not? Also the Robocop BD looks fine, sure it's taken from an oldish master and it's an 80s film so could do with a proper remaster, but what we have already is without question a step up from the various DVD releases (and I've owned them all).

I have the Casino Royale Aus BD (got it with $10 off).
Mark, I have the original MGM SE of Robocop, is the Steelbook much better?
Glad I didnt order Dressed To Kill now after hearing about the lack of mono.

Evil Dead 2 - the BD was heavily DNR'd making all the cast look waxy. Even the 2001 DVD has better detail than this. So after watching the BD I immediately E-bayed it.

It's horrible. It suffers from "jaggies", interlacing, or whatever the fuck you want to call it, resolution issues and other HD mastering artifacts. It looks far worse than the DVD, even without up-scaling.

Loads of 1080i discs are amazing looking still, it means nothing at all on the vast majority of peoples equipment, never mind their eyes.

Re. Casino Royale: I'd like to get the 2-disc deluxe BD but it went OOP.

Re. Robocop: I seem to remember reviews being highly critical of the BD.
I'll take another gander at them...

Jammy. Which edition?
Mark, I have the original MGM SE of Robocop, is the Steelbook much better?
I'd say yes.
Glad I didnt order Dressed To Kill now after hearing about the lack of mono.
Amen.

It's also a matter of principle. Why should I give my money to a company that can't even be bothered to a do a proper 1080p transfer?

Mark - Casino Royale was the normal edition BD (not Deluxe) but $AU9.95 seemed a decent price imo. I'm happy with it for now, now I have an uncut BD. :)
Does Robo Steelbook improve in terms of image, extras etc?

Agreed, and I avoid giving EiV my money as much as possible, Dark City is the only BD of theirs I own.

Shame the company behind that makes far, far, far worse discs than EIV ever could :o in fact so many companies still suck so bad, Fox, Universal etc.. all proiduce pure shit beyond unwatchable.

1080i aint no problem, Noise reduction, edge enhancement, sharpening and shit like that is what people should be making a stand against. Something 99% of the public can even see.

It is true, give me a good 1080i transfer over a 1080p one nuked by EE and DNR any day of the week (although I disagree that you can't tell the difference between 1080i and p, sometimes it is very apparent when you see stuff like shimmer).
Markgway wrote:Re. Robocop: I seem to remember reviews being highly critical of the BD.

They were, but this was back in the early days of BD reviewing when most of the big site reviewers were expecting 1980s films to look sharp as a tack with minimal grain. It's an OK HD presentation, I've no doubt it could be improved but it does the job.

Scratch that, watched it last night and the brightness is far too high, I'm assuming the Criterion will sort that out so will wait for the DVD Beaver comparison.

Nice one. Worth AU$10 for sure.

Those Blu-ray "caps" are crappy photos of a projector screen.

Nothing wrong with the brightness at all on that release.

I was wondering about that... I was waiting to see if anyone said anything. :D

I guess at the time I didn't realise.

Explains why I thought the disc looked naff... lol
