Thanks Salty. I can wait :).

I'm now confused what is so wrong with TBB? I mean is it really that bad? You say stick with the DVD but then say it's hugely better in the resolution department.
Markgway wrote:Not sure if Fox have the BD rights to this but you think they would put out something so obviously a magnet for criticism? Any distributor worth their salt would request a new HD master.
Fox never bothered for the DVDs and they're huge. Just making the point.

I can set mine to Stereo but not Mono. Besides it doesn't work that way.

But pointed taken, there are plenty of discs where the mono has been dropped. I don't mind unless it's one of those god awful OTT 5.1 remixes. Which Anchor Bay love.

Had a quick look at Fist Of Fury and my initial thoughts are one of huge disappointment. It doesn't look HD in any way shape or form.it's an AVC Transfer but the transfer looks so lifeless and weak.will have to watch it properly of course but my advice-keep your dvds.
i posted this before i'd even looked at TBB. After watching it i said
saltysam wrote:If you can live without the mono (the mandarin 5.1 sounded fine to me but i'm no audiophile) the increase (and it's huge) in resolution makes this an easy upgrade.
So to sum up if you are happy with 5.1 mandarin then TBB is a no-brainer upgrade.my initial thoughts on FOF were poor but i'll hold off until i watch fully tomorrow.checking a disc when you've just got up off nights might've clouded my judgement :) i never said anywhere here that TBB was bad :?

A Good example of the increased resolution can be found in the climactic battle on the lawn. on the BD you can see every bead of sweat on Bruce & The Boss's face :)

I couldn't be arsed going to that much bother. I want the original audio ready and waiting for me when I put in the disc. That's the least they should offer. Why is it deemed OK to vandalise the original sound design yet the same people cry blue murder if DNR is applied. Aren't both wrong?
Lazy maybe, The majority of Joe Public couldnt care less about mono, they are too busy thinking 7.1 DTS ES SUPER HD SOUND is always best :D even if they only have a 2 speaker TV set up haha
Muppets the lot of 'em.

Anyway if its not the original audio it won't matter if you turn your speakers to Mono.

It depends on how they've mixed it, sometimes the added elements appear only in the surround/stereo speakers, so turning off every speaker bar your center will give you the original mono presentation. IIRC the IVL One Armed Swordsman is an example of this.

Often original elements are also placed in the front/surround speakers too.

The Big Boss looks good - if a touch overly pink in skin tones.

But Fist of Fury looks terrible. The Fortune Star DVD is superior and represents how the film should look.

Is there something wrong with those caps?
The Fortune Star DVD of Fist is clearly superior to the BD.

I bet you are looking at the caps on a tiny little PC screen that has never been calibrated in its life. That says it all.

Can't say I'm seeing the much better resolution Salty mentions in those cap comparisons, the Fist of Fury BD is quite soft and looks noise reduced. I must say I'm really shocked by how much picture information there is on the BD release, more picture in every direction! Obviously you expect the HKL disc to be cropped to fuck but we all thought that Fortune Star got it right! :D

Comparing the Fortune Star and BD I think Mark and Grim have a point, which one has the correct colours? The Fortune Star obviously has some contrast and brightness boosting but the BD appears to have been blue filtered, to the point that blacks have become blue! Was Bruce Lee's outfit in the Japanese Dojo fight scene really blue all along? Was Robert Baker really dressed up in a blue bow-tie and blue braces? I very much doubt it!

There's also an issue of stretching, the BD looks slightly vertically squished to me, either that or the FS DVD is vertically stretched.

The BD looks even more greenish to me than the DVD, at least its not overly pink.
