I think Charlie Kaufman is probably the most genius screenwriter around, don't see how it can be pretentious when it's genuinely brilliant.

The whole concept is treated pretentiously. It's a ridiculous idea that should have been played an all out farce, but instead we get this indie, hipster, aren't we so clever mind fuck that believes it's actually saying something. The characters are Kooky with a capital K (Cusack is a puppeteer FFS - NO ONE is a puppeteer!). I didn't care about the characters or buy into the absurd plot - which would be fine if the film were funny, but it isn't, at least not much. A portal into someone's head? Malkovich's head? Why? What's the point? Does eccentric equal interesting? I seem to be in the minority on this so I guess I just don't do quirkiness or whimsy. I don't rate Wes Anderson either and Mumblecore isn't my thing. I suppose that all ties together.

You take everything so seriously. I bet the film-makers weren't taking as serious as you are. It's a Spike Jonze film btw.

I'll say it another way, it's not a Wes Anderson film.

This might be of interest to Criterion collectors from another forum

"hi guys

deep discounts deal of the deal is :

criterions (about to be released) last temptation of christ (on blu - region A locked though) $ 20

enter code NET5 for a further $ 5 off

postage is $ 5.98 to UK, so total cost inc postage is a pretty reasonable $ 21 (approx £ 14)"

Thanks Salty. I'm happy with my Criterion DVD.

I'd pick up Traffic Criterion for that though.

I recall the DVD having poor black levels so it'll be nice to see it properly.
