Heads up it looks likely the USA BD will be a 2 disc release, why not the UK too? :shock: . Still if the above specs turn out to be true I'll just get the USA release. I can then sell on my DVD. Pity the UK cover art is much better.

saw this eventually not too long ago,pretty much overrated imo.wouldn't watch it again in a hurry.thanks for the info but i'll pass.

No worries Salty. Personally I thought for once it wasn't overrated and thought it was fantastic. I'd definitely pick up an HD release.

It's a very good, well-made, well-acted movie with a thought-provoking and pretty original story.

... but I agree it isnt much fun to watch.

Not overrated, as it's an undeniable classic... but it's not 'enjoyable' in a sense that you pop it in and watch it...

I would score the movie a 9 outta 10... but I might like a 8/10 movie better. If that makes sense.

It doesn't have great re-watch value but I don't think it needs to. It's the sort of film you may only watch 1-2 times.

Second disc confirmed for USA BD. The UK BD is only 1 disc!

First the bad news:

Reading reviews it appears the Tartan UK BD's deleted scenes are a PAL to NTSC standards conversion. Thankfully they're just extras so it's no huge deal. The audio has been bumped from 5.1 to 6.1 though.

Now the good news:

The audio is still 7.1 and I was having my fears the rumoured second disc of extras was just that a rumour. It's not mentioned on any e-tailor. However checking out this DVD Beaver review I am well pleased to see a second disc is included.

As suspected it's a SD DVD:

I prefer the UK cover art but obviously the USA BD is the clear winner. It looks like Tartan have replicated the UK BD by including the 10 deleted scenes (presumably NTSC this time) on the BD too but strangely also have also included them on the second disc.

I'm well chuffed as there is now zero reason to keep my existing DVD.

The DVD Beaver review suspects the extras would've fitted on the Blu-ray itself. It looks likely Tartan didn't feel comfortable giving the UK market a 2 disc release so instead replicated the BD in both countries and just re-used disc 2 of their 3 disc DVD set in America. The extras are identical:

That would also explain why the deleted scenes appear twice. Which still doesn't explain why they didn't release Oldboy on 1 BD in both countries but include the extras. Even so considering the UK BD has PAL to NTSC extras I'm pleased they didn't.

Oh and considering both Oldboy and Black Book UK BDs are Region Free there is no reason to believe this USA BD won't be the same.

The USA BD is region free, but disc 2 is region locked. I've ordered one. I prefer the USA cover, as it happens.

Where did you read disc 2 was DVD Region 1? Not that I'm surprised when it's obvious Tartan just reused a disc they already have.

Please post what you think of the AV when it arrives. Where did you order it from?

Unfortunately I won't be getting an HDTV again till after Christmas when the price has gone down a bit on the new Toshibas, but I have read that this is the best that Oldboy looks out of all the releases available

I ordered it from a zShop on Amazon.co.uk, ImportCDs, whom I use a lot. It only cost like £12.65 plus the postage.

What happened to your old HD TV?

According to the MovieTyme source from that link disc 2 is Region A. That would imply it's a Blu-ray Disc, it would seem strange to make it Blu-ray. Not that it matters if it's a DVD or Blu-ray Disc. If it is a Blu-ray Region A disc it's obvious Tartan don't want people importing it.

Thanks Gasteropod. I'm only ordering BDs or HD-DVDs if they're under £10. Anymore is too much when I cannot actually play them.

Yeah, I read that disc 2 is just a DVD.

As for my TV, I realised it wasn't doing everything it was advertised as doing (24fps), so ended up getting a refund. The new model does do it though, so that is the one I shall be getting!
