Kid with the Golden Arm R3 vs R1

Post by oldeschool17 »

Had a friend help me out on the IVL caps. Usually when I do IVL caps, you can clearly see the interlaced lines but for whatever reason, you do not see that on his caps. However, you can clearly see the blur.

Comments:
-No brainer, R1 wins. Progressive, English/Mandarin Audio, better subs, doesn't have the saturation that IVL typically has.
-Easter egg on playing correct or incorrect sequence when Iron Robe sends out the signal
This is done by pressing up on PLAY during the Main Menu. When you press up, the text for Kid with the Golden Arm changes to a different shade. Click on the text and the following screen shows

This is seamless branching. Again, only accessed if you find the easter egg. Otherwise, the film will play with the out of sequence(as done on the IVL version) by default.
-Deadly Duo trailer is the Celestial Pictures version but clearly utilizes the subtitles of the Media Blasters version.
-Five Element Ninjas trailer is the old U.S version.
-Martial Club is the standard Celestial Pictures version. No subtitles. Why this didn't utilize subs like the Deadly Duo trailer, who knows.
*No comment on audio quality of English dub as went through the disc real quick. Would not be surprised if this suffered the same "issues" that was on the Five Elements Ninja dvd(General fans will not notice but most audiophiles will pick up on it).

He's set his de-interlacer to bob I think (as opposed to weave or off)
Easter egg on playing correct or incorrect sequence when Iron Robe sends out the signal(I believe this is done by pressing up on PLAY during the Main Menu. Will need to verify/compare later on). When you press up, the text for Kid with the Golden Arm changes to a different shade.
Personally, I agree with Markgway about Easter Eggs. I don't like them as they're potentially hard to find, and I like to have everything listed.

Still, glad it's included. Is it a clip, or the full film seamlessly branched?

Looks solid.

I thought the same thing. My friend uses PowerDVD and the setting must be on auto or Bob by default. Cant be bothered to walk him through to change the setting as I haven't used that shitty prog in years and its not important as I think we all know by now what to expect from IVL.

See the first post for updated info, Chen.

It should have been used on 'Martial Club' (as pointed out in my review), but at least, I'm glad they've finally implemented it :D! Hopefully it'll also be part of 'Heroes Two' Blu-Ray with the 'Three Styles' feature - it's needed. Sadly, I don't have Blu-Ray at the moment.

I really want to buy the rest (with exception to 'Brave Archer'), but I'm going to try finding a way of watching them first to see if I actually like the film.

Do they not have a Netflix equivalent in Scotland?

Personally, I think the whole Brave Archer series is garbage. Classic case of a great cast and good action, but shitty implementation of a novel into a movie. Chang Cheh was trying to cram way too much crap even while spreading it out in 4 films.

So Martial Club only featured alternative cut(s) as a stand alone extra? No surprise there but rather surprise they implemented seamless branching for Kid with the Golden Arm.

We've got LoveFilm, but you can't rent non-UK titles (due to licensing issues obviously).

Someone sent me a movie file of the first and it wasn't my cup of tea either.

It featured the one cut. However, the English dub used (World Northal's) was slightly shorter and filled the gaps with Cantonese/subtitles (mentioned in my review - http://www.kungfucinema.com/forums/show ... tcount=104). The constant reverting in one scene was distracting, whilst people used to their tapes may find the transition difficult. I've seen a US trailer for it - wonder if they knew about it.

I just wish there was better communication, etc. Since Richard York's departure, I've been trying to keep contact - currently awaiting reply from someone who works on the Shaws.

The first Brave Archer is the best.

The third is the easiest to follow (though perhaps only if you've seen 1 and 2)

The fourth is the poorest.

Sounds kinda like what happened with 5 Element Ninjas
