It's a pity it doesn't look better. It's worth pointing out the original DVD is chocker block with white fleck marks.

The new one looks a bit blurry to me.

Soooooo... it's either too much edge enhancement, or too soft... wonder how the blu-ray looks.

Agreed.

I'd still like to know how this is a 'PG' in the US with the line "nice fucking model" that got it a '15' over here.

Interesting "Big" got the same rating over there despite the F-word (I thought that was the point of PG-13)?

Forget the EE the fleck marks are much worse.

The new release looks a little cropped at the top.

The scenes with less picture at the top have more at the bottom, so it looks like it's been slightly re-framed (hopefully to be more correct, and not some major screw-up like with BTTF).

Maybe the negatives just aren't very sharp, if so I'm all for it being slightly soft in place of EE.

A shame there wasn't more extras, or a complete set of the cartoon series

I know I'm surprised this film got a PG in America, consideringly less creepy fare got a PG-13

The new one seems to have been smoothed down, probably to reduce film grain. I personally prefer the smoother look to the Edge Enhancement, but both are objectionable of course. I suspect the BD release will be done the right way.

Regarding it's certificate in the USA, I think this film is comfortably within PG-13 confines. I also disagree with the UK '15' cert for the film. It should be '12' now considering what's being passed '12' today (The Dark Knight anyone?).

The Dark Knight should've been a 15 but I agree this is 12. I think Mark was saying he's surprised it's a PG not PG-13 in America.

Yeah. The MPAA could've given it a PG-13 but didn't and gave it a FAMILY friendly PG despite the single use of strong language (and comic horror). Thus defeating the entire point of the PG-13 rating. The MPAA did this a number of times and it's really an unsolved mystery. This from a country where you can't even say 'shit' on Network TV. It's a wonder parents didn't complain. The film and video were passed 15 in the UK at at time when there was no 12 available. If it were submitted now it would comfortably be a 12.

I wouldn't expect logic from the MPAA. They're a joke.

Apparently, the Beetlejuice show got into trouble because Lydia kept calling him "B.j"

I think everyone's being harsh on the R1, it's not THAT soft, it just looks really soft next to the massively artificially sharpened R2 DVD (which truly is a horrid transfer).

Agreed. I wasn't saying it was bad, just a little soft. The UK R2 original DVD is a disaster. I couldn't believe how many fleck marks are throughout the movie.

I didnt know that. From what I remember of the cartoon, it did have some of the films dark/gross humour.
I used to have a crush on Winona Ryder in the film

The cartoon is a tad too lightweight for my liking, but i would still enjoy a complete box-set

It was kinda odd really: a much younger Lydia is pals with Beetlejuice, and the Maitlands are no-where to be seen

I always saw Lydia as being 12 or so in the cartoon TBH.

I loved her in Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, but she was pretty wretched in Dracula
