Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
'Drag Me to Hell' is the worst Sam Raimi film I've seen to date. Everything seemed so predictable and hackneyed, and I just didn't care about the lead character (she completely lost me when she stabbed the kitten to death). I hoped that this would be a fun return to the genre for Raimi, but he seems to have lost his touch, and no amount of splashy CGI can make up for good, old-fashioned, no budget grue.
Hung: Part of the reason for posting reviews (more quick takes, really) in the first place was to generate discussion, but that rarely happens now. Posting thoughts is too often a waste of time and brain power. Like I said, I'll post a star rating, as that gives you an idea of how much I liked the film, and if you want to know more, as LS did (above), I'll happily elaborate with text. And I don't necessarily watch every film in my posts back-to-back, though I usually try to watch at least one film a day to keep my strength up.

The Purge (2013) - 3/5
Better than I thought it was going to be, reminded me of Funny Games, very violent for a 15.

Man of Steel (2013) - 4/5
My first IMAX 3D experience and it was pretty overwhelming. The film is messy, narratively more like a montage, but at the same time so entertaining and the fight scenes just made me have a massive grin on my face.

Me either. Never seen a Superman movie I'd give more than an average rating to. I don't suppose this one will be any different.

Superman 2 is great stuff. The first one is good, though overlong.Markgway wrote:Me either. Never seen a Superman movie I'd give more than an average rating to. I don't suppose this one will be any different.

Enter The Dragon 4.5/5 the film i grew up with is no more, replaced by a "SE" with the ill-advised reintegrating of the monk scene back into the movie...still there's a fast forward button folks. Bruce shone more in his HK movies than here as he has to give more screen time to the likes of John Saxon.the breakthrough newcomer here is Jim Kelly, full of on screen natural charisma and cool...should've been a much bigger star than he was.
Hatchet 3 2/5 by the numbers sequel, lashings of gore but little else. nice to see genre star Caroline Williams get a decent role after years of bit parts. Zach Gilligan of Gremlins fame as the sheriff just looks tired nowadays

yes i did.i don't think it's much of an upgrade on the 2007 edition really, it's cropped, some of the colours look off but at least the hd audio is better.the jaggies have gone though.grim_tales wrote:Did you watch the 40th Anniversary Blu Ray of ETD, Sam? After Earth (2013) - 1.5/5
Poor performances, poor cinematography, effects, plot, pretty boring all-round really.

Tense, twisted kidnap thriller with Halle Berry (as a 911 operator) throws in the credibility towel in the final act.

Blood 2/5 grim new british thriller is relentlessly downbeat, featuring Paul Bettany & Stephen Graham as two cops investigating a girl's murder who takes things too far.
Death Race Inferno 2/5 As stv movies go,watchable enough.

Man Of Steel 2.5/5 Loud, bombastic with a messy narrative filled with flashbacks this movie is all over the place.despite this,it's entertaining and the last 40 minutes or so is just one wild slugfest. watched this in 3D in a D-Box seat...reminded me of seeing Earthquake & Rollercoaster back in the 70's

Sickeningly violent garbage exists solely to prove I was wrong about Regeneration being the franchise nadir. Top-billed Van Damme is barely in this nonsensical garbage (and was clearly fulfilling some sort of contractual obligation).

I thought Day of Reckoning was brave filmmaking. A hard as fuck psychological action piece with absolutely no wise cracks. Stood out for me as a good piece of filmmaking but with a richer depth of writing could've been phenomenal.

to be fair i can see where you are coming from with Reckoning...but to flip that argument your opinion is so far removed from what 99% of others think of Regeneration maybe it's you that's wrong..Markgway wrote:I respect your opinion. You're wrong. But I respect your opinion.
