The Man with the Golden Gun: R1 UE vs. R1 SE
The Man with the Golden Gun
Top: R1 SE
Bottom: R1 UE
The Man with the Golden Gun looks much better. Cleaner, brighter and less EE. The colour seems to be correct as well, for
instance, the blue in the first capture. The framing is now at 1.85:1 which differs from the 1.78:1 of the original. I assume,
given the other Connery movies, that this is the correct framing. More is seen at the side as well. All around a nice transfer.

Thanks again CJ.
I suspect 1.85:1 is the proper aspect ratio, many anamorphic DVDs get cropped to 1.78:1. Any ideas why?
I've never noticed the difference before but you can here, not that I reckon you'd notice it on a TV screen. That fag screenshot removal also changes the colour of Bond's suit, why bother???

1.78:1 is the native ratio of widescreen TVs. 1.78:1 images suffer from less over-scan than 1.85:1 ratio transfers in a lot of cases.bradavon wrote:I suspect 1.85:1 is the proper aspect ratio, many anamorphic DVDs get cropped to 1.78:1. Any ideas why?
It depends on the film, if it was shot soft-matted or hard-matted. If it was hard-matted, then yes it would have been cropped if the DVD transfer ratio is 1.78:1. With those that were soft-matted, they're actually LESS CROPPED - more horizontal information.
