Mr Vampire: HKL vs HK Vidéo vs IVL

Post by tom2681 »

The HKL is cropped from 1:85 to 1:778
The HK Vidéo is window-boxed at 1:66

Note: Yes I know there's already a DVD-Beaver comparison. :D

HKL:

HKV:

IVL:

While the HKV has stronger colors and more vertical information, it lacks sharpness.
The HKV still has the edge on vertical information, but the IVL is much sharper.

IVL:

The HKL shows obvious signs of vertical squeezing. It makes Moon Lee's breasts look bigger, but I don't like it.
IVL: Finally, she looks pink. :D

IVL2:

Could the french DVD be the only one in the world to properly translate the Coffee/Gafeh joke ?
IVL: Wow. Not only does it have a proper translation, but it's even more accurate than on the HK Vidéo. :o

HKL:

HKV:

IVL:

Less grain on the HKV, more detail on the HKL.
+ There's some kind of blueish tint on the HKV.
IVL: Better colours, less grain.

Yeah, the HKL image is better, but shame about the dubtitles and squeezing.

That's the one I have.

I have the IVL/Fortune Star. Can you PM me the times? I use Topaz Moment for screengrabbies. I don't use any filters and noise reduction is a no-no as it removes the natural film grain.

I don't have the times right now, but:

1st shot = First scene. Just after the guy has been attacked by skeletons and a vampire has escaped from his coffin. He walks up to the other vampires and starts counting them.

2nd shot = About 15 / 20 minutes in. The coffee-drinking scene. Moon Lee arrives, sits down, and the guy looks at her and says something like "Ah yes she's all grown up".

3rd shot = 1 or 2 minutes after shot 2. After the waiter's gone, the guy asks his master if he can have coffee too.
(If you can't get a shot with the subtitle on it, can you at least tell us what the subs say ?)

4th shot = The grave-lifting scene. Maybe 25 minutes in. At the beginning of the scene, all the characters burn incense one by one, then we see a very wide shot.

5th shot = Near the end. The uber-vampire has arrived and destroyed a lot of things. The Master and the cop arrive. Big close-up of the two of them realizing that something's wrong, then this wide shot.

tom, I'll see what I can do. I'm fairly sure it'll take screenshots with the subtitle. I'll do it quite soon and host the images through imageshack.

I might need to retake them because it was on "weave".

Retake them anyway. :D

Leave it on Weave (it doesn't perform any deinterlacing), but RESIZE IT TO 720x404 !!
Your caps are vertically stretched.

No brainer to the IVL. The stretching is weird but I seriously doubt I'd see it in reality.

How do you come to that conclusion?

Isn't the HKL renamed?

The stretching is becuase the screencaps wern't taken correctly. I'd say it's weird that you'd fail to notice such a thing when watching the movie

The HKL title card is new. Media Asia seemed to have some moral objection to green scary writing as they did the same on Encounters Of The Spooky Kind

Ah thanks.

I'd be too busy watching it to notice/really care.

There's a 20% vertical stretch on the faulty caps above. I'm sure you'd notice that. :D

Most HKL DVDs suffer from a 6% horizontal stretch. Some people don't notice it, but it really annoys me. All actors look "flat" on HKL DVDs.

Tom could you fix them? I can't be bothered  and Ray I doubt posts enough to spot it.

Any idea why? Re: the 6%.

They're always cropping them by 6% on the sides. Then, they stretch the picture to keep the aspect ratio. Don't know why. :(

EDIT: caps have been fixed.

The only thing that stopped me upgrading to the IVL was the stupid names they've given the characters... what is it Fred or Harry and the like? At least the HKL gets their names right SOME of the time.

I'd rather have Fred and Harry than a coffee and a coke.

It's Dan instead of Fred on the IVL. Sorry about the caps. I set it on no enhancement when I was capping the shots via Topaz Moment.
I bought the IVL from www.play-asia.com. Hope that helps!

Not exactly a huge difference then.

No worries. That's normal btw, you just need to resize afterwards.

I'm sure Tom can explain why?
