Note: While the french disc has:
-many exclusive extras.
-removable subs.
It lacks the DTS soundtrack that could be found on the Universe.

Both discs are interlaced.

Universe:

Asian Star:

The french disc is much sharper, but it appears to have some kind of slightly greenish tint.

Universe:

Asian Star:

Finally, the license plate is readable.

Although I do detect some slight edge-enhancement on the background hills.

Universe:

Asian Star:

Still sharper. The Asian Star seems to be slightly cropped on the sides, while it shows more information on the top and bottom.

Universe should be ashamed of themselves. How dare they make Daniel Wu look blurry ?

hey

thanks for the breakdown but I found the Universe transfer acceptable. Will upgrade to the Tai Seng R1 which will probably hold the same HK transfer but subbed extras.

What's the exclusive extras on the French release?

Damn, this is a hard one. How big is the video file on Asian Star dvd?

Let's see:
-13-minute featurette. Both discs have it.
-Premiere of the film. Both discs have it, but it appears to be longer on the french disc.
-28-minute making-of. Both discs have it.
-6-minute Jean-Pierre Dionnet introduction (kinda like what Bey did for Moon Warriors). Asian Star exclusive.
-26-minute making-of. Asian Star exclusive (lots of interviews with Derek Yee, Alex Fung, Cecilia Cheung). Extremely enjoyable.
-13-minute Derek Yee interview. Asian Star exclusive.

You mean the vobs ?

4 gb for the Universe transfer.
3,8 gb for the Asian Star transfer.

Pretty much the same. I can't see any compression problems on the Asian Star disc.

hey,

still sounds like if you get the Tai Seng R1 which has the subbed commentary and other subbed video extras, you should get a pretty good overview of the film. Not saying the French is bad but it doesn't feel like it has a 100% advantage.

Awesome.

I'll be making a subbed dvd-5 of it, remember. I was afraid that if it was a big ass file then I would lose all the advantage. But now there's no problem.

I tried to fit The Blade on dvd-5, with disastrous results. I ended up splitting it into two dvds. I did the same with Lily Chou-Chou (Norman's Nose was about 8GB

) when I was subbing it.

Not to worry then.
The entire film + soundtracks + subs fits on a DVD-5 with no compression whatsoever.
They had to lower the bitrate a bit to make room for the extras.

I don't trust Tartan as far as I could throw their discs.

hey,

not to start another controversy but Tartan felt the need to go in and "correct" things by re-titling the film to One NIGHT In Mongkok. Don't know if the print was altered though.

Tartan runtime is 110, IMDb says 110. Avoid the Tartan.

Didn't realise that there was an R1. Doubt it would better the R2FR in any case.
