Ashes To Ashes (Life on Mars follow up)

Post by grim_tales »

Just been reading about Ashes to Ashes (the 1980's spin-off to LOM) - it appears Keeley Hawes has been cast as DCI Alex Drake:

Would that be the same Keelley who gets her kit off in Page 3? :D

For what it's worth, she is the voice of Lara Croft in the modern games.

Except for Grim and I is anyone else watching this?

It's bloody fantastic and is easily up there with the best of American TV shows, seriously it's a proper show. Isn't it Grim?

To add weight to that statement "Life on Mars" is being remade in America. How they're going to cast Gene hunt is beyond me. I cannot wait for tomorrow nights episode. If you guys outside of the UK can get a chance to download it - Do!

Episode 2 is much better than Episode 1 so don't give up if you've only seen Episode 1.

I just watched episode 6, as usual excellent.

When Gene Hunt shoots the window, SO, SO cool. It was pretty dark before that. Next weeks looks great. I cannot believe it's over in 2 weeks :(. You win Grim I've been converted :D. I'll have to buy the Life on Mars: Series 1 box set.

Who wants to bet they'll shag by the end of Series 2? :D . They SO fancy each other.

Glenister defends Ashes to Ashes co-star, 13 March 2008:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/enter ... 293756.stm

I couldn't agree more with what he says here, especially when he says:

* Many fans are being misogynistic, so what if the lead is female? I think it makes the show even better, interplay between men and women is great.
* So what if it's she's middle class? Most people are anyway.
* I agree they'll have forgotten about it by next series, that's a pretty big tip off too :D
* She can definitely act too, she's very good actually.

Ashes To Ashes: Episode 6 - 5/5

Absolutely brilliant episode. I loved it. Some very funny lines "Used to call him Hunt the.." when referring to Gene nearly made me fall of my chair
"Some people get Pick of the Pops, I get Pick of the Twats" - classic
Loved Ray's reaction to finding Gene's doodle of him and Alex :D
Loved the cute Shaz/Chris scene :)
Maybe I should have figured out the wife was the killer though, this episode also worked very well as a drama and there was great acting between Keeley and the little boy I thought.
Gene shooting through the glass was brilliant. Excellent music too (Japan, Ultravox, Stranglers).
The little boy's birthday party scene reminded us Alex had to get to Molly's birthday.
When Alex said something about the brain staying conscious for 7 minutes after dying, does she mean that or 7 seconds Huh? In E1 she said 7 coma years = 7 seconds?!
There was Molly again. Why did she suddenly appear/disappear?
Excellent stuff. Can't want for next week!

Grim do you have to post about Ashes to Ashes in every thread? You've now reviewed it 3 times :D . It was only on last night.

p.s - Fair enough you've posted it in the specific topic and in the TV thread though. I do the same with movies.

I've just been reading an article with the writers of Lifes on Mars/Ashes to Ashes and it mentions some interesting titbits. Here's it typed up:
"We start filming series two in September" says Graham. It's all moved on a year, it's 1982 not 1981 - it's the first time we've done that - it gives us a chance to do things against the Falklands and the post-Scarman fallout.

"It's a much darker show - there's still lots of humour aand weirdness, but it's got much more of an edge to it this time. We loved series one, but I think we over-frothed it, we were having so much fun that I think we lost some of the darkness we liked in Life on Mars - so series two is about reclaiming that darkness."

"Also, we wanted to make the two series very different", adds Pharoah, "the bright colours, the big hair, the poppy electro-dance stuff. Probably now we can recalibrate: get a bit more serious.

There's a three-year plan for Ashes to Ashes and both writers promise an ending that will re-define even Life on Mars.
I cannot wait. I'm a wee bit concerned about the darker tone though, while Life on Mars is very good I loved the lighter tone of Ashes to Ashes so much. For example I cannot wait for Ashes to Ashes: Series 2 but haven't felt the need to check out Life on Mars: Series 2.

It's just not as much fun. Still, like I said, it's very good though. Both series have very strong writing.

I do like the idea that both series are very different.

Does 3 year plan mean 3 series?

I was wondering that. I guess so. I thought they only wanted to make 2 series. I guess they changed their minds.

In real life, does Keeley Hawes have one of those stereotypical "Windsor" accents that yanks love?

She uses one when she's voicing Lara Croft for the Tomb Raider games.

Do you have an MP3 clip? I can then say if it's put on.

Yes to an extent, her voice in Ashes to Ashes and her current series (I forget it's name) she has a plummy English accent. So yes you could say she does.
