70's Shaw Bros doc "Kung Fu"

Post by grim_tales »

I found this on DVD United, it looks interesting but I wouldn't pay £15 for it :o Has anyone seen it?
In the 1970’s two Chinese words were introduced to the world, “Kung Fu”, Hong Kong’s unique gift to the history of movie making. The first hero and most prolific character in Chinese martial arts movies was a real life doctor and martial artist who died in 1924. His name was Wong Fei-hung, and he has been played on screen by both Jackie Chan and Jet Li, although actor Kwan Tak-hing played the character in 76 movies earning himself, and the films, a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

In the earliest martial-arts movies, there was no real choreography performers who blocked out their fight movements before filming began. But in the 1960’s, martial-arts advisors began to lend a hand and thanks primarily to the legendary martial-arts director Chang Cheh, choreographers became an irreplaceable role on the film set. The best known of these early choreographers was Lau Kar-leung, a real life martial-arts master whose “Kung-Fu” lineage can be traced back to that of the real “Wong Fei-hung”. Clips from Lau Kar-leung’s Heroes 2, Challenge of the Masters, Dirty Ho, Eight Diagram Pole Fighter, and The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin illustrate real martial arts in its early heydays on screen. Clips from Jackie Chan’s “Drunken Master”, and Jet Li’s Once Upon A Time In China, and Chang Cheh’s cult classic The Five Deadly Venoms illustrate the theatrical martial arts.

“Cinema Hong Kong: Kung Fu” also takes a look at the realism that Bruce Lee brought to the screen in his films, and the effect that Lee had on the industry. The sub-genre of comedic Kung Fu is also explored from its beginnings in Lau Kar-leung’s directorial debut, Spiritual Boxer, to the worldwide success of its most famous export: Jackie Chan. Interviews with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Sammo Hung, Lau Kar-leung, Hui Yin-hung (a.k.a. Wai Ying-hung), Gordon Liu Chia-hui and newcomer Shannon Yao discuss the evolution of the “Kung Fu” movie from its birth in Hong Kong to its re-imagining in Hollywood reconfirming the legacy of “Kung Fu”, Hong Kong’s unique gift to the world of cinema.
