The Limit of Sleeping Beauty (Ken Ninomiya, 2017)

Looks like Ken Ninomiya had made a feature length remake of his medium length 2014 feature The Limit of Sleeping Beauty. Theatrical release in October.

I saw the original film in Yubari a few years ago and this is what I wrote about it:

The Limit of Sleeping Beauty (Japan, 2014) [Yubari Fanta] - 3/5
Here's a director to keep an eye on. The 23 year old Ken Ninomiya has already made quite a few interesting short and feature films, some of which have played on international film festivals. This medium length movie challenges Tsukamoto, Aronofsky and Alex de la Inglesias, and although it ultimately falls short, it's amazing how Nimomiya has managed a film that is technically better looking than anything Tsukamoto has done in more than a decade. The film's main problem is the lack of originality: a 29 year old actress-wannabe stuck as circus assistant and losing her mind (add hallucinations, pills of all colours, and mad clowns) isn't exactly an original premise to anyone who is familiar with the works of the fore mentioned directors. But the film does look - and sound - stunningly good a lot of the time.

I still haven't watched Ninomiya's earlier film Slum-Polis, which is out on DVD, and looks interesting despite some amateurishness.

Extracted this into a topic of its own.

Saw the feature length version and it`s very good, if flawed.

The Limit of Sleeping Beauty (リミット・オブ・スリーピング ビューティ) (Japan, 2017) [DVD] - 3.5/5
One of the few recent Japanese films to grab you by the balls, a wild acid trip into the psyche of a desperate actress in the crossfire of love, dreams, abuse, clown, and psychedelic night club where she part-times as a circus girl. There's a lot of Aronofsky, Iglesia and Tsukamoto in the film, with a bit of Spring Breakers Korine and plenty of director Ken Ninomiya's own approach where music and visuals are inseparable (there's about three album's worth of good music in the film). His energy and that of the cast (especially Yuki Sakurai from Sono's Tag) transcend the budgetary limits that show in lesser image quality than the superb visuals deserve. You can tell Ninomiya never went to film school - or if he did, he skipped the classes - but stayed home watching movies instead. There lies the film's flaw as well: originality is lacking as the influences are too evident. But give him time, this is one of his first films, a remake of his (equally stylish and and similarly flawed) short film of the same title from a few years back.

My laptop got fucked so I can`t take screencaps from the dvd. Though BD is how the film should be viewed. I`m kicking myself for skipping it in theatres.

Though I forgot which, some retailer or rental store had accidentally labelled this as an R18 release. I think the Cinema, BD and DVD were all R15, though. This came back to my mind because some of the scenes with nudity seemed risque enough to warrant a bit of censorship (in terms of framing and visual effects and filters) for R15, and I started wondering if an R18 version really existed.
