Kevin mentions it looks like influenced by Norifumi Suzuki's Sukeban movies. That's certainly true, yet this one doesn't look so good, while Suzuki's film's were so good. So I started thinking why is it that 70's action exploitation movies were so cool, and today the genre generally sucks. Some things that came to my mind:

- The 70's films were shot on 35 mm, giving them a more solid look than the cheap digital video of today.

- The 70's films were produced by major studios like Toei and Toho. While the budgets may have been low, the films greatly benefitted from the assets that the studio had (in other words, they could use high quality cameras, studio sets, cars and stuff that was perhaps intended for a big budget film and has now become a left-over). That's not the case today, as exploitation has become mostly a small-studio genre.

- The 70's films had more solid cast. Toei's pinky violence stars were genre icons, and supporting roles were filled with reliable actors many of which might have had several decedes of acting experience (think of actors like Nobuo Kaneko, Akira Oizumi, Fumio Watanabe...). Very few of today's genre film actors are reconizable, have charisma, or are good at acting (Riki Takeuchi is one exception that comes to mind).

- The 70's films had more solid crew. Director's like Norifumi Suzuki and Teruo Ishii were not arthouse directors, but their technical skills were hugely impressive. Ishii's surreal visions were often amazing, and Suzuki's School of the Holy Beast can be compared to Dario Argento films in terms of visuals. Their colleagues as well had gone through the long studio stairs before becoming filmmakers. Not like today when they buy a video camera from the closest store and become filmmakers. But of course, there's talent in today's V-cinema as well, especially in the pink genre.

- Some of today's films appear too self-aware, trying to be as crazy as they can, while Teruo Ishii's films were mad because the director was frustrated and bored, and wanted to experiment and do something new.

The tone and look of that trailer are all wrong. I agree with everything you said in your post. Yet I am MILDLY interested.

The Japanese Wife Next Door has a horrible cover art, but Kevin writes abot the film "A wickedly humorous tale of sexual repression and depravity, played to near perfection by an insanely fun cast".

They actually look slightly better now, and show some nice gore, but the trailers still constantly remind that these are still just bad copies of good movies. Sukeban and Sasori, Leone rip off music, even Kill Bill copy shot. But while Tarantino and Sono know how to steal someting cool and remix it into something new and cool, these look like just a shadow of the originals with nothing new to add, and even done much worse than the originals.

And Asami dear, I'm happy you've found work outside AV but please, some acting lessons are in a need.

Sachi the Killer?

Koroshiya Sachi by Kouki Yamaga and starring the 20 year old AV star and fucking midget (147 cm) (pun intended) Naruse Kokomi, Shijimi, Kyoko Hayami, Keisaku Kimura, and Masaru Matsuda, has a rather interesting trailer. I can't tell if it's the trailer or the film itself, but the footage in this preview at least is quite interestingly edited and shot.

The film's title, Koroshiya Sachi, appears to be an intentional reference to Miike's cult classic Koroshiya Ichi - Ichi the Killer. The dvd will be release next month.

The director's previous movies looked quite poor, so I doubt this will be any good either. But the artwork sure is fantastic.

I like the sound of Asami and rape but I do have my doubts about the Zombie thing. All kidding aside I'm sure this movie will be at least watchable and hopefully I get the chance to see it someday.
