For fans of late Teruo Ishii:

Release date: 2011/06/24

This is a documentary about Ishii and the making of his last film, Blind Beast vs. Killer Dwarf, which was made largely with the help of film students and devoted Ishii fans. The documentary was originally released in 2006.

Random awesome news part MK:
"Kaji Meiko just released a new album where she sings the Truck Yaro theme! http://bit.ly/iZQ5OJ"

She's also in Toei News, as in in October they will release the two Wandering Ginza Butterly films, already out on DVD in the US by Synapse. I wonder if their sales are hurt by imports by now. I've actually seen Synapse's (Toei film) dvds on sale in HMV in Japan. Horrors of Malformed Men was there at least, something else too but can't remember what...

Crap. It looks like Toei has cancelled this release. Maybe soundtrack copyright issues???

That is a crushing disappointment. Hopefully it's not due to lack of decent elements.

I take it these are the Japanese answer to Germany's SCHULMÄCHEN REPORTs? Or would they be "real" documentaries more along the lines of the "Mondo" flicks?

I check quite regularly this thread and your other ones.

The movie is on vod at Rakuten's (like the sequel of Shokin Kasegi by Eiichi Kudo) but I don't know if we can watch it abroad.

"Sneak Preview of 2012

Coming in 2012, a set of stellar samurai films, plus the long-awaited Blu-ray release of the complete Shogun Assassin series!

If classic samurai films are your cup of green tea, you'll love Eiichi Kudo's Samurai Revolution Trilogy, consisting of 13 Assassins (1963, aka The Thirteen Assassins -- recently remade by Takashi Miike), The Great Killing (1964, aka The Great Duel) and Eleven Samurai (1967).

And if stellar swordplay is your bowl of rice, then you'll be pleased to know that the complete 5-film Shogun Assassin series, dubbed into English, will be released in a Blu-ray collector's set."

Yes, yes it does indeed! I'm looking forward to compliment the framed TORN PRIESTESS poster over my bed with a R2J on my shelf. It'll also be nice to finally see Makiguchi's Oden Takahashi film. Somehow I doubt Toei will be able to beat the stunning PAL release of OXEN SPLIT, but I'm eagerly awaiting screenshot comparisons anyway.

Chusei Sone's Â!! Hana no ôendan films coming to R2J on 2012/02/02. Available separately and in a box set.

嗚呼!! 花の応援団 (Â!! Hana no ôendan) (1976)
嗚呼!! 花の応援団 役者やのォー (Â!! Hana no ôendan: Yakusha yanô) (1976)
嗚呼!! 花の応援団 男涙の親衛隊 (Â!! Hana no ôendan: Otoko namida no shin'eitai) (1977)

The films are based on manga by Dôkuman, and were produced by Nikkatsu. Nikkatsu also had some non-pink productions in the 1970's... some say it was partly so that they could prevent their best directors like Sone (who clearly had talent much beyond pink films) leaving the studio. Screenwriter Yôzô Tanaka is quite well known, too... he went from Nikkatsu pink to Toei Yusaku Matsuda films and eventually to Shinji Somai classics in the 80's... his work is a bit uneven, though. Nikkatsu star Junko Miyashita appears in all three films.
