I watched it too, on cropped and not-so-hot VoD transfer. Nice neo noir, though not as great as Kurosawa's best films. I also liked the soundtrack and cinematography. A bit too much sex in it, though.

I sort of got the impression of Kurosawa that up till his masterpiece Ecstasy Sisters in 1982 the guy was working real hard to prove his worth, but after that he maybe lost some motivation. His early films are all staggeringly stylish and often original, so much more than pink films ought to be. Ecstasy Sisters was the peak - a masterful slice of life Tokyo film that could easily have been released by ATG. Next came the Wakamatsu/Konuma esque period film Banned: Woman’s Secret Pictures which was sort of ambitious but IMO failed. After that all of Kurosawa's remaining roman porno's were lightweight comedies (Lolita Wife), romances (Fake Widow), or comedy/romance/thrillers (Young Lady Detectives). The one exception was his final Nikkatsu release, Dream Crimes, which however is an utter mess of a neo noir if you ask me.

The one Kurosawa I haven't seen is Nurses' Journal: Animal In the Afternoon. I want to see it, but I need to sign up for a mail delivery dvd rental first...

Do you mean 夢犯 (1985), with the Takashi Ishii screenplay? I've been meaning to track that down on VHS eventually, same as ルージュ (1984).

Yep. Don't set your expectations too high. It's like a B-version of the first Black Angel movie. Kurosawa + Ishii sounded like a dream team, but this is both of them at their worst.

Rouge is kinda good. The main problem is with the ending, which is way too simple considering the skilful build-up. This may be the director's (Nasu) or the studio's fault rather than Ishii's. Weisser and Robert Firsching both write identical non-sense fairytales about the film's ending - none of the stuff they describe is actually in the film. To add to the confusion, the Japanese website Movie Walker describes yet another slightly different ending with stuff that isn't in the film. Just to make sure I'm not crazy I had my (Japanese) girlfriend watch the last 30 min of the film and she agreed, all the plot descriptions were all nonsense.

I don't know what's going on here, but I find it hard to believe there would be several different versions of the film out there. Perhaps the film's screenplay is available, or maybe there's a manga version, or an early plot description or something, that these "professionals" used as their reference, I don't know... The VoD version I watched was no doubt taken from the VHS and runs the same 94 or 95 min that all databases quote as the running time...

Explanation with spoilers:

Both Weisser and Firsching praise the film for an ambiguous ending which leaves it unclear whether the killer (of Muraki) was Nami or her reporter boyfriend. Actually there's no ambiguity at all. We see in long detailed scene how Nami stabs him, blood sprays all over her, and she even washes the blood in the next scene. The reporter is sleeping at the hotel all this time, and when she comes back and is about to smoke a cigarette, he takes a lighter out of her bag and discovers the lighter is covered in blood (because Muraki used it when he was killed). Talk about ambiguous ending...

Movie Walker "makes up" something else. They explain that after the killing Nami walks on the pier and hears someone calling her name... Actually no one calls her name. She's alone and just throws the lighter into the sea. The end.

Except for the ending the film is a stylish neo noir with good acting, good characters and good storyline. As the 94 minute running time suggests, it's not much of a typical Nikkatsu exploitation flick, but something that would essentially pass as a mainstream film. Director Hiroyuki Nasu isn't known as the studio's top director, but here he handles the material quite well. The film certainly has a strong Ishii feeling, resembling his other drama-driven films like Original Sin, Alone in the Night, A Night in Nude, or Love Hotel, though it's not quite as good as those films.

English language sources usually consider this a part of the Angel Guts series, but I think it's pretty safe to say that's nonsense, too. Just being a neo noir scripted by Ishii, and featuring Nami and Muraki as characters (like almost all screenplays Ishii ever wrote), doesn't make it a part of the series...

This film was directed by Nikkatsu's action film specialist Yukihiro Sawada (Retreat Through the Wet Wasteland) and features quest appearance by none other than Yusaku Matsuda.

Anyone seen this? Been considering buying the dvd for a long time, right now it's cheap, but I'm not too sure about the film anymore. Sawada was very interesting in the early/mid 70's (Retreat though the Wet Wasteland, 1973 ; Assault, 1976) but in the late 70's he was directing tired formulaic Yusaku Matsuda flicks (No Grave for Us, 1979) and not-so-stylish pink stuff (Flesh Target: Rape!, 1979). This one's got both pink and Matsuda in it...

edit: went and ordered it after all, got it for a 2200 yen.

I liked it. It's very well made on a technical level and has more on its mind than just getting to the next sex scene. Hiromi Okamoto is really good in it and I thought the ending was great.

Watched it and already sold it to the next lucky (?) owner in Europe.

Can't say I really agree. I found it to be very much like the other Yukihiro Sawada films of the time. Pretty much like a Toei Central crime film merged with Nikkatsu Roman Porno of the early 80's. In other words, sex, unengaging storyline, and a couple of bullets, not especially stylish either. Also, the urban night views and the assault rifle featured in the poster are nowhere to be found in the film. I'm still puzzled as to what happened to Sawada. After directing stylish, rough and interesting crime/action/pink hybrids in the early and mid 70's (e.g. Retreat Through the Wet Wasteland, 1973 ; Assault, 1976) it seems to me like he lost his motivation towards the end of the decade, coming up with tiresome action and sex films that could have been helmed by almost anyone.

In any case, glad I saw the film, even if it bored me to death, had been wanting to see it for at least 6 years.

Still interested in some of the other violent pink films Sawada directed in the late 70's... Rape Frenzy: Five Minutes Before Graduation (1977) and Attack! (1978), unfortunately neither one seems to be anywhere to be found. I'm not sure if they ever came out on video...

The false advertising of the poster annoys me as well. I still liked the film and stand by what I said about Hiromi Okamoto. Then again, I have never seen Retreat Through the Wet Wasteland and I had a blast with Flesh Target: Rape...

Arrow's upcoming Branded to Kill BD features Atsushi Yamatoya's Trapped in Lust as a bonus feature! It's a cool film, caught it on 35mm last year in a Atsushi Yamatoya triple feature. Unfortunately it seems it will be on a bonus DVD, so no HD for that. Still very nice as long as it's NTSC or Native PAL.

SHOGUN'S SADISM is getting a Blu-ray release from Japan Shock, the same Dutch label that put out the film on VHS and PAL DVD since the mid-90ies. The recent Toei DVD was a slight improvment over their old DVD but it was a SD transfer so we'll see if they really did their own HD transfer from the 35mm negative like they claim or if it's an upscale. DTM only lists German subs for it but I'm fairly sure it'll also have Dutch and English subs in place:

http://shop.dtm.at/product_info.php?products_id=55720

I'll update on that when I get my copy in 2 weeks.

I asked them about maybe looking into TORN PRIESTESS as well again since a forum spokesperson agreed with me that it looks right up their alley in... 2007. Not getting my hopes up on that front to be honest. They seem content releasing the same handful of films again and again, only adding a dub here and there and upgrading the medium over time. They have BD releases for the other Tokugawa films planned, however, so I'd expect at least Teruo Ishii's JOY OF TURTURE and INFERNO OF TURTURE in the future.

I can't think of anything else that might be worth noting. Maybe I should check out those two films you mention.

TOKUGAWA - WOMEN'S PRISON TORTURE (Onna - Ro Hizu) aka DECAPITATION ISLAND was directed by Toshiaki Tahara in 1970. There's a R2J DVD from 2008.

Image

TOKUGAWA - VIRGIN PRISON TORTURE (Hiroku Nagasaki Onnaro) was directed by Akikazu Ota in 1971.

Finally got around to watching DREAM CRIMES. I found a factory sealed VHS that probably wasn't worth what I paid for it. I agree the film is pretty bad, an example of the boring kind of roman porno where numerous ludicrous sex scenes are strung together with the laziest attempt at a plot. I actually watched the Blu-ray release of BLACK ANGEL VOL. 1 the day before and don't think it deserves to be mentioned alongside this mess. My only real problem with BLACK ANGEL VOL. 1 is the very painful Engrish spoken by Ikko and her buddy. DREAM CRIMES on the other hand had me honking laughter at idiotic sex scenes like the out-of-nowhere electric chair watersports dream sequence or the lesbian rubber tentacle scene. Definitely not something that should be watched sober - or more than once.

I think it's a pretty good film, although it may disappoint hard core exploitation fans as it's remarkably tame for a 1970 production. It's not so brutal, and there are boobs in only one scene, although that scene is a small classic. The film did have censorship problems with nudity, though, so it was originally supposed to show more. However, it's a surprisingly well made film with decent characters and good story, good direction, interesting island location, and nice cinematography. I'd say it's a more coherent film that the Teruo Ishii movies of the era.

I had the pleasure of viewing it in Tokyo on 35mm when it played in a Female Prisoner retro last year.

That's interesting to hear. The Japan Shock release got mostly very negative reviews both for the picture quality, which is said to be only VHS level, and for its lack of sex and violence. The last two are of course due to the label releasing them with the misleading TOKUGAWA title, suggesting to the less-informed customers that the two films are related and similar to Teruo Ishii's costumesploitation films.

I love the German cover for New True Story of Woman Condemned to Hell.

Interesting to see what they'll do with Lolita Vibrator Torture. Will they release it as The Secret Garden, or...

There's more Synapse announcements to come later.

I think they probably stole it from another WIP film.

Just VIBRATOR TORTURE might be fine though I have no idea what you can and can't use for a title if you want to be distributed by amazon etc. I really wonder if they will get the extras from the Japanese DVD. I'd love to get a subtitled version of that commentary, at least. Sato's only one to date, far as I know.

HungFist wrote:There's more Synapse announcements to come later.

There's still a few missing from their initial 28 title announcement in 2009. By my count they have released 22 titles so far and I'm still waiting for Hasebe's RAPE!

Only German subs, I'm afraid.

The Blu-ray looks great and I'm sure they did indeed transfer it from the 35mm negative. I did a comparison between the 4 existing DVD and BD releases of the film:

Aka Hot Springs Kiss Geisha, with Miki Sugimoto, Yoko Mihara, Nobuo Kaneko and Ema Ryoko. Directed by Norifumi Suzuki. Fourth (final) in the series.

Need quick help! How good is this one? Looks like Suzuki comedy silliness to me (with boobs). I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of his comedies, nor his early 70's sexploitation (Modern Porno Tale, Tokugawa Sex Ban). I need to decide within two days whether I'm gonna see this or Chotto kawaii Iron Maiden (2014) on screen...

Plot description does sound quite, ehm...

"Onsen suppon geisha was part of a Hot Springs series, with Sugimoto having debuted in the first installment in 1971. In this one, she’s so good at using that super strong vagina of hers that she can fuck guys to death. In the end, she’s pitted against a sexual superman and a showdown ensues. There’s also a subplot about a mad scientist type who needs vaginal juices to create a potion designed to turn Japanese girls black."
