3 Days of a Blind Girl (1993, Hong Kong) internet 3.5/5
Don't remember much about the film except that the shower scene was amazing. Worth seeing for that scene alone!

Child's Play (USA, 1988) [Hulu] - 2/5 Seminal but frustrating piece of 80s horror, occasionally entertaining but full of irritating characters acting like idiots. Amazingly enough, this was banned in Finland back in the day (Finland had its own "video nasty" craze that extended to both video and th...

Re: The Teruo Ishii thread

I watched the two Abashiri Prison films I had not seen yet. Abashiri Prison: Duel in the Wilderness (網走番外地 荒野の対決) (Japan, 1966) [DVD] - 2/5 Part 5. A mediocre-at-best entry. The first 15 min is dedicated to Toru Yuri and others goofing around in the prison (typical for the series, and Ishii, unfortu...

The Town (USA, 2010) [Hulu] - 3.5/5 Another good action/thriller/drama by Ben "I direct better than I act" Affleck. Good story, decent action scenes and an ending that seems like an improvement over the source novel. Oh, and in all honesty Affleck isn't a bad actor these days, he makes a pretty goo...

Re: Arrow's Female Prisoner Scorpion BD Set: An Utter Disaster?

I am generally supportive of Arrow and their releases. I mean, they put/will put WOLFGUY and HORRORS OF MALFOPRMED MEN on Blu-ray. They are releasing an Akio Jissoji ATG film box set. I can't be anything but supportive of all that, especially since I don't see anybody else willing to touch these ti...

Argo (USA, 2011) [Hulu] - 3/5 Not bad thriller by Ben Affleck, but I don't quite get the high praise. The last 20 minutes is the most intense part, though almost entirely fictional in a film advertising itself as true story. That's quite ok in the name of entertainment; stealing the honour from the...

Re: Arrow's Female Prisoner Scorpion BD Set: An Utter Disaster?

And how do you know which of them are correct? I really want to know. Well, for starters: 1. The Japanese 35mm prints (which I've seen myself) have the normal look. It was evident even when the prints were beaten. 2. French Jailhouse 41 DVDs (old Studio Canal, and remastered Pathe) taken from a cut...

Re: Arrow's Female Prisoner Scorpion BD Set: An Utter Disaster?

Yep. Worse yet, Toei just might have convinced themselves that it's not worth investing money in proper remasters.

I'd be willing to bet National Film Archive in Tokyo has pristine prints of these films.

TV Review / Not Available on DVD Saburai: Way of the Bohachi (忘八武士道 さ無頼) (1974) Disappointing follow-up to Teruo Ishii's chanbara masterpiece Bohachi Bushido: Code of the Forgotten Eight (1973). Ishii mentioned in an interview that he didn't even know Toei had made a sequel. This is a blatant re-te...

The Greatest Post-War Gambler (戦後最大の賭場) (Japan, 1969) [DVD] - 3/5 With all the criticism on remakes and reboots these days, it's good to remember that back in the 60s and 70s it was ok to remake a movie a mere 12 months after its release. This is a modern day re-imagining of director Kosaku Yamashi...

Sad news. The new Toei Channel HD broadcastings are indeed the Arrow transfers! Below are two screencaps in SD from Jailhouse 41 (because I only have subscription to the SD version of Toei Channel). I haven't checked the other films but by all means they should be the same. Jailhouse 41, Pt 2 Discot...

Cover Girl Models (USA/Philippines, 1973) [DVD] - 1.5/5 Another Cirio H. Santiago film offers better kung fu but even more nonsensical storyline than Fly Me. The boring plot is something about a microfilm and American models in Hong Kong and Singapore accidentally getting involved. Plenty of (unspe...

Full trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2l28BI9ZI8 I'm not terribly convinced. The trailer makes it looks like a 2018 version of 1969. Which is the exact same impression I get from The Blood of Wolves trailer, which makes it look more like a V-Cinema film than something (succesfully) mimickin...

The 5.1 audio on Olive's Foxy Brown BD sounded a bit trange to me... dialogue tended to be low, and music really loud. No mono available. I wonder if Arrow sounds better or if the film really is supposed to sound this strange? Can't recall ever hearing a movie sound like that before... According to...

Re: Vampire Clay (Chi wo suu nendo) (Soichi Umezawa, 2017)

Caught this on Amazon Video and I'm sad to say it bored me to death. On the positive front there's an almost fanatic avoidance of CGI in favour of practical effects on display here. The film is however strangely dull in technical terms: the music is terrible, the video and sound editing lack any pun...

The Arena (USA/Italy, 1974) [DVD] - 2/5 Regrettably lame peplum with Pam Grier and Margaret Markov captured by the Romans and forced to fight as gladiators. There's a bit of appeal to the cast and concept, which however soon wears off due to the mediocre filmmaking and poor action. Too soft and lig...

I had quite similar thoughts about The Post . Foxy Brown (USA, 1974) [BD] - 4/5 Ultra groovy blaxploitation with Pam Grier taking revenge on a drug and prostitution ring lead by a young white woman! Great soundtrack, plenty of kick ass Grier and fantastic costumes, though you wish Pam would show ski...
