R.I.P. Masashi Ishibashi

The man who played villain in almost every Toei karate film ever made, who gave Chiba the opponent he needed and helped choreograph films like The Street Fighter, and who according to a story used to drop by at Masutatsu Oyama's dojo on his way home as guest instructor, is gone. He was 85 years old ...

Flight viewing: part 1 The Meg (USA, 2018) [Flight] - 3/5 Jaws for today's kids: Statham vs. giant CGI shark. Very watchable nevertheless. It's a bit amusing how clearly this was aimed at the Chinese markets... the last 30 minutes in spoken mainly in Chinese! Skyscraper (USA, 2018) [Flight] - 3/5 Th...

I didn't even know about those Wicked Reporter films. Seems like the DVDs are long OOP and not available for rental.

I only saw my first Mochizuki film, Minazuki, a few weeks ago. Won't be my last one! Really liked that one.

I'm in complete agreement about the Roman Pornos. I'd love to see the Sex Rider sequel surface some day. Maybe I should ask Toei Channel  As for the Delinquents, it's been a decade since I saw those two. I rated them higher but I also recall the 2nd film being the weakest. The 立看 poster is one ...

Two movies I watched just before a 10 hour flight  Non-Stop (USA, 2014) [Netflix] - 4/5 Dynamite Liam Neeson thriller never lets go once it gets going. Superb entertainment, other than the C-grade CGI effects at the end. Also, the storyline might not make logical sense in closer inspection, but...

13 Steps of Maki (若い貴族たち 13階段のマキ) (Japan, 1975) [TV] - 4/5 Nothing much to add that hasn't already been said about this one. Ultra sleazy and violent bad girl / martial arts film that absolutely needs to get a DVD/BD release. Laplace's Witch (ラプラスの魔女) (Japan, 2018) [BD] - 1.5/5 The latest ...

Re: Japanese cult cinema thread

Cool. Thanks. Small correction, though: it's parts 3-8 that are getting low priced in February. 1&2 already went low before, I think.

In addition to the parts 1-6 above, I've also seen part 8 (not very good). Got part 7 in the digital pile waiting for viewing.

The Young Vagabond (Hong Kong, 1985) [Netflix] - 1.5/5 The youth of Beggar Su (Gordon Liu) depicted as a b-grade kung fu comedy. There are some good moments (e.g. a funny dinner scene where the girl's father and the boyfriend realize they've met before... in a brothel!) but the whole thing is so di...

In summary, at least a 4/5. Give it another go.
My dad used to say something like "I guess I'd rather do that than get beaten up"

Thanks for the background info, though. I never knew nor bothered to find out about that.

Killer Elite (UK/AU, 2011) [Netflix] - 3/5
Mediocre action mayhem elevated by an intriguing early 80s England setting and an unexpectedly good villain/opponent (Clive Owen). DeNiro is good, too. Supposedly based on a true story, possibly all made-up - that's just the way it should be.

While the Women Are Sleeping (女が眠る時) (Japan, 2016) [Netflix] - 2/5 Rarely do you see a potent thriller lose its way as badly as this Wayne Wang Japan entry does. Thanks for posting those. So, they are doing airbrushing now? Seriously, for fuck's sake. Those women without nipples are disturbing. How are you supposed to explain to a kid why they have breasts without nipples? Wish they'd just slap some text or credits over the boobs (like Toei sometimes does) i...

Wheelman (USA, 2018) [Netflix] - 3.5/5 A getaway driver receives a threatening call while on a gig. Tightly paced at just 82 minutes and claustrophobically filmed almost entirely from inside the car, this is less an action film and more of a tense, well written thriller with a good leading performa...

Onsen osana geisha (温泉おさな芸者) (Japan, 1974) [DVD] - 1.5/5 The 6th and final Hot Springs Geisha film, somehow as tame if not even tamer than the 1968 Teruo Ishii original. Wicked City (妖獣都市) (Japan, 1987) [DVD] - 3/5 Horror anime misses its noir potential by being too fast paced and technically video-like; however, it's packed with impressively grotesque monster imagery and explicit sex.
