Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

The Arrow is like a faded version of how it should look like. I don't own it, but I think if you enhanced the color and blacks a bit, you'd probably get an acceptable presentation. The internet is full of all kinds of self-declared experts who claim to know how Japanese films are supposed to look li...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

The colours on the BD looked rather subdued to me (I watched the Arrow version). It's regrettably colorless, yes, but still much preferrable to the Criterion transfer which looks like it was supervised by Michael Bay for MTV... it's an absolute disgrace. - http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=...

The American (USA, 2010) [Hulu] - 4.5/5 Quiet, lonely hitman (Clooney) retreats to a small Italian town by the mountains and starts working on a new assignment. Atmospheric, beautifully filmed and impressively low key film which reminded me of the most meditative of Italian action films and western...

Bushido: The Cruel Code of the Samurai (武士道残酷物語) (Japan, 1963) [DVD] - 2.5/5 Repetitive and overlong, but powerful criticism of the Japanese social hierarchy and the unreasonable side of the traditionally romanticised bushido code. The film chronicles eight generations of Iigura family men (cleverl...

I watched a film last night and I can't remember what it was. It'll come back to me... Getting old, huh? Olympus Has Fallen (USA, 2013) [Hulu] - 3/5 Dumb, occasionally incomprehensible but fun action thriller. The hero keeps putting himself in a disadvantage by feeding the enemy with information fo...

Mortal Kombat (1995-USA-Thailand) **½ Imaginative game-to-film adaptation overcomes a thin script with impressive production design and plenty action (the best of it choreographed by star Robin Shou). Christopher Lambert treats the material with knowing irreverence. Soundtrack is spot on (even thou...

Slight spoilers ahead Ash vs. Evil Dead: Season 3 (USA, 2018) [Hulu] - 3.5/5 Just as enjoyable as the first two season, and perhaps the most even of them. Season 1 started with some of the worst episodes in the show, with absolutely appalling CGI shit splatter (thank God Sam Raimi didn't direct any ...

Siege (1982-Canada) *½ I was kind of expecting that  P.S. Streaming is a waste of money. You don't own anything. I'd only pay for something I can hold in my hand (other than my dick). ;) Does that mean you never rented anything? You don't own rental discs either. And never saw a film in cinema...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Just checked. No Hulu in the UK. If it's a pay service, I wouldn't bother anyways, as I'd never pay to stream anything. Why not? Is it this film here? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slowg6hJ5mE Yes, however, that seems to be cut by 10 minutes. It's missing all the character introductions ( the her...

What's Hulu? I guess you don't have it in the UK? Like Netflix, but with less crap... Not that Hulu's selection (in Japan, at least) is any great shakes either. I got it for one month just to watch Ash vs. Evil Dead S3... anything else they have comes as a bonus. Siege was a small discovery though....

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I enjoyed Eraser as well. Saw in theatre when I was 10 years old. Re-watched it last year on rental BD. I may be alone in this, but End of Days is my favourite late (post True Lies) Arnie film. Siege (Canada, 1983) [Hulu] - 3.5/5 A pretty cool Assault on Prescient 13 variation. The police are on a s...

We do get a half naked (literally... the right half) Jennifer Lawrence though.
It's hard to get worked up about that when we've already had Rosario Dawson's labia in Trance.

Jen and co need to catch up! :D

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Unusual for me, I watched three new films in cinema back to back. The Post (USA, 2017) [DCP] - 3.5/5 Enjoyable political thriller/drama, extremely timely for its theme (freedom of press) despite being set in the 1970s. Also nice to see a film with a 68 year old actress (Streep) and a 61 year old act...

Shinjuku's Number One Drunk: Killer Tetsu (新宿酔いどれ番地 人斬り鉄) (Japan, 1977) [TV] - 2/5 Below average Toei yakuza mayhem from late 70s when the genre was already past its prime. Emergency Line (Japan, 1976) [TV] - 3.5/5 The last of the mid-70 action/detective shows with Sonny Chiba, this one makes an immediate impression with its grit and darkness. Rape Shot: Momoe’s Lips (レイプ・ショット 百恵の唇) (Japan, 1979) [VoD] - 2.5/5 This fast paced, surprisingly watchable pop thriller emerges as junk director Katsuhiko Fujii's best film. Re: Sonny Chiba Mega Review Thread

A few words about the technical quality of the two Dragon Princess DVDs . The BCI, which presents the English dubbed American cut of the film, is quite poor unfortunately. It's from a beaten print with pale colors and other issues. The Toei dvd, which features no subtitles sadly, has 10 times better...
