Quick-Draw Okatsu (Yôen dokufu-den: Hitokiri okatsu) (1969) DVD 3.5/5 Junko Miyazono returns in this NOT-a-sequel to 1968's Ohyaku: The Female Demon (a B&W semi-classic that is considered an early influence to the pinky violence genre), as a wronged female swordswoman out for revenge. I would i...

Doberman Cop (ドーベルマン刑事) (1977) Amazon Prime - 3/5 I was looking to buy this and saw it was watchable for free on Amazon Prime... 10 minutes into it and I was hooked! Shinichi 'Sonny' Chiba plays a country bumpkin cop who shuffles into town (complete with straw hat and live pig!) to investigate the ...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Reiko Ike has a small role as a henchman's wife, who gets offered up to a wrestler as a prize. Luckily for her, he doesn't last to take advantage of it, and it seems she finally has a role (albeit an incredibly small one) where she keeps her clothes on. But no, she's later offered up to another hen...

Battle Without Honor and Humanity: Proxy War (仁義なき戦い 代理戦争) (1973) DVD - 3.5/5 Better than the first, but not quite as good as the second, it's still an enjoyable movie for what it is... the inner workings of a specific group of yakuza gangs as they all battle for position and power. And that is som...

Re: Books on Asian Film

Finally picked up an original copy of Hiroko Sakurai's book '929 Days of Akiko Fuji' (フジ隊員の929日) Can't read a word of it, of course, but it features some cool behind the scenes pictures from the original Ultraman series (1967), one of my favorite TV shows as a kid. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uHb9XuI...

The Hoodlum Soldier (兵隊やくざ) (Japan, 1965) [DVD] - 3/5 While Japan's militaristic past may remain a touchy subject in politics, there are few nations that have made mainstream war movies as self-critical as Japan. Here we have an ultra violent war satire set in Manchuria, where the Japanese troops n...

Battles without Honour and Humanity: Hiroshima Death Match (Japan, 1973) (DVD) - 4/5 As close to a love story as these movies will probably get, it still takes a major back seat to the same double crossing, killing, and quest for power as the first movie. Bunta Sugawara as Shozo Hirono is still her...

Cops vs Thugs (Japan, 1975) Amazon Prime - 4/5 Continuing his cold, hard un-glorified look at the world of the yakuza, director Kinji Fukasaku, surprises us half way through the movie when a new no nonsense Chief (Tatsuo Umemiya) decides to try and clean up the police department. The Machine Girl (Japan, 2008) contv.com - 3/5 Hadn’t seen this in 7-8 years, but it popped up on a free movie site and I decided to re-watch it this morning. Over the top in a way that would make Sam Raimi proud, it’s the story of a school girl who’s brother is killed by the son of a yakuza. When ...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I like all of the films in the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, especially the 2nd one, but in all honestly I feel most of Fukasaku's other films from the same era are better (e.g. Graveyard of Honor, Yakuza Graveyard, Cops vs. Thugs, Hokuriku Proxy War). Cops vs Thugs is on U.S. Amazon P...

Battles Without Honor and Humanity (Japan, 1973) Amazon - 3.5/5 This movie is chaotic and overwhelming through most of the first half hour, as characters appear and die in such a hurry, its hard to know exactly what’s going on. I started to enjoy it once I realized that the primary focus should be ...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I think it's a rather wonderful film. It's of course low budget Tarantino/Woo/Lam rip-off action trash, but executed with such insane energy that it reminded me of the craziest Hong Kong action films.... Yeah... as a fan of all three of those guys, I will have to certainly check this out.... Strang...

Ong-Bak The Thai Warrior (Thailand, 2003) U.S. DVD - 3/5 Picked this up at a V-stock for $5, not having seen it since back when it first came out. What Video on Demand service do you use? Amazon Video and DMM and DMM . Be warned that most films on DMM are VHS era masters, though it doesn't really matter for films that have never received a better master. And you'll probably need a proxy service to access them from outside of Japan (payment is...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I use jmdb all the time, but it's in Japanese only. It's a lot more barebones than IMDb, basically just a text database, but very good for checking exact release dates or learning which films came out the same day as double features. For English sites, IMDb is generally good, you just have to keep ...

Girl Boss Revenge: Sukeban (Japan, 1973) DVD - 3/5 Sort of strange that Exploitation Digital chose THIS movie as one of their early releases. And for a Norifumi Suzuki movie, it’s kinda tame until the finale, where it seems the colors start to really pop and the girls get their revenge. Miki Sugimo...

Her 1st movie, actually... I have a lazy habit at times of using imdb.com for Japanese movies, despite the fact that I know they aren't as on target with their information (They list Ninkyô hana ichirin aka Chivalry of One Lone Flower with Tatsuya Fuji as her first movie). For Chinese films I use h...

School of the Holy Beast (Japan, 1974) Website - 4/5 Director Norifumi Suzuki is impressive in this exploitation movie that is beautifully shot and put together. This isn’t a jerk-off movie, this is a director who is making a FILM. Sure, it has T&A, plenty of it; and the story IS pure exploitat...

Female Prisoner Scorpion: 701’s Grudge Song (Japan, 1973) Amazon Prime - 3/5 The studio kept cutting back the budget, so Meiko Kaji quit the series after this movie, and even though it’s considered the weakest of the films, it still has it’s moments.
