Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Around the World in 80 Days (2004, USA) Amazon Prime (2.5/5) As a Disney movie this is pretty enjoyable - as a Jackie Chan movie it's also pretty enjoyable, but none of it is must see repeated viewing or anything that must be added to his highlight reel. This is Jackie in modern times, and I suspect...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Tokyo Idols (Canada/UK, 2017) [Netflix] - 3.5/5 Very enjoyable if partly entry level documentary excels with an intimate portrayal of both the girls and the fans. What is truly surprising, especially from a foreign (Canada-UK) financed doc, is its non-judgemental approach which sets it apart from t...

The Medallion was the US version of Highbinders right? Maybe that's better? I don't think I've seen it (or don't remember).
From what I understand there is an additional 20 minutes to the movie.

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

The Medallion (2003, Hong Kong) Amazon Prime 1.5/5 I'm honestly at a loss to explain this movie - for some reason, I thought throughout that it was an American made film and thus, understood how poorly it underused Jackie's abilities... but the truth is... Jackie officially got old, and in the cour...

Behind the Pink Curtin by Jasper Sharp

Behind the Pink Curtin by Jasper Sharp $25 SHIPPED (in the U.S.) One of the definitive books on the subject, this huge 400 page book contains a LOT of photos and even includes a 15 page color section. It isn't short on exposition either, with plenty of insight on the history of the genre. https://1....

Oriental Cinema Magazine + Behind the Pink Curtain

Selling off some stuff.... Oriental Cinema Magazine - Huge Lot of Mags - I make no apologies that I was a big fan of Damon Foster's extremely opinionated magazine throughout its history. Now YOU can be the proud owner of an almost complete (Draculina Publishing) run of it - something you rarely see ...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

What is it you actually liked about 'Who Am I?' Everytime someone spoke a line of dialogue in that movie I winced in pain. Yeah, the acting in WHO is atrocious, but then Rush Hour has Chris Tucker.... I think he is definitely the measuring stick to people's feelings on that movie. I didn't mind him...

Shanghai Noon (2000, USA) Amazon Prime 2.5/5 I'd never seen this movie from beginning to end, as I always seemed to fall asleep through it. My son loves both of the films in this, but... I just didn't know. Watching it now.... well, I took a nap halfway through it. Grossing just slightly more than ...

The Accidental Spy (2001, Hong Kong) haiuken.com 3.5/5 Jackie uses a familiar formula - regular guy thrown into chaotic situation/two hot co-stars - but scriptwriter Ivy Ho (Comrades, Almost a Love Story, The Age of Miracles) actually helps give this some suspense and structure. I actually wanted t...

Rush Hour (1998, Hong Kong) DVD 4/5 The reason I like a lot of Hong Kong cinema is because it's different than what I would sometimes EVER expect in an American movie. But from the time Jackie Chan first started to try and break into the American market, there's was a great deal of debate as to HOW...

Gorgeous (1999, Hong Kong) DVD 2.5/5 The first thing to remember about watching this movie is that it is NOT a Jackie Chan movie, but a Shu Qi movie put together by Vincent Kok for HER to star. Jackie's world just happens to be added in. But this is a romcom first and foremost, and one Jackie very ...

Jackie Chan's Who Am I? (1998, Hong Kong) DVD 2/5 I enjoy foreign movies in their native language with subtitles because I want to hear the inflection of voices and emotion. I've learned to accept bad dubbing to some degree, because of the cheap way many of these movies are put together, after prod...

Mr. Nice Guy (1997, Hong Kong) Amazon Prime 2.5/5 One of the last times Jackie and Sammo would work together and the LAST time Jackie would let Sammo direct him, Mr. Nice Guy is a pretty average Chan movie that's only redeemed by what he can do in it. The acting is horrible - seriously, for some re...

Angel III (aka Iron Angels 3) (1989, Hong Kong) Amazon Prime 3/5 This might be the best AND the worst of the Angel films. First Strike (1996, Hong Kong) DVD 2.5/5 Another attempt to break into the American market, Jackie Chan’s First Strike is a somewhat entertaining action movie with a confusing story, some great action scenes and Jackie’s goofy brand of humor. 1995 1995 was a big year for Jackie Chan, as he'd broken into the American market finally, and at the same time set a new record for the highest grossing film in Hong Kong Box Office history (which he'd break the following year - it's still #6 all time). Stephen Chow had FOUR movies in the top ten -...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

1994 1994 had been another great year for Stephen Chow, but Jackie Chan had the biggest hit of the year with Drunken Master 2. Michelle Yeoh continued to not impress at the HK box office (though I remember kind of liking Wing Chun) and Jet Li's numbers continued to slip. The HK box office in general...
