Re: Killing 斬 (Shinya Tsukamoto, 2018)

Got the chance to see this on Thursday, a mere three weeks after its world premiere at Venice. I'm pretty sure it was my first theatrical Tsukamoto, too. The film is probably my favorite among his most recent output. It's very obvious that it was shot on the same digital equipment as his last couple...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Mandy DCP 4/5 Beyond the Black Rainbow was one of my most anticipated films of the the year it came out and also one of the biggest disappointments when I actually watched it. Maybe it was the lowered expectations but I really dug Mandy. It's basically a 1980ies Heavy Metal comic come to life, a mi...

That pretty much guarantees we'll get TOKUGAWA SEX BAN from Arrow in the near future, doesn't it?

Takashi Miike's new flick LAPLACE'S WITCH (ラプラスの魔女), a tiresome and bloated "thriller" comes out on DVD/BD November 14th.

Killing 斬 (Shinya Tsukamoto, 2018)

Re: Japanese cult cinema thread

Speaking of Sone, Happinet will also re-release his 元祖大四畳半大物語 (1980) on October 2nd. This is a slice-of-life comedy based on a manga by Leiji Matsumoto about a country bumpkin moving into a tiny apartment (the 4 and a half tatami mats of the title) in Tokyo and the wacky shenenigans that ensue. It w...

Re: Arrow's Female Prisoner Scorpion BD Set: An Utter Disaster?

I'm really curious what the Japanese fandom thinks of these transfers. There probably isn't much to be found just based on the Toei Channel broadcast but I expect them to get a BD box set sooner or later and I'm already looking forward to those amazon reviews.

Re: Arrow's Female Prisoner Scorpion BD Set: An Utter Disaster?

I am generally supportive of Arrow and their releases. I mean, they put/will put WOLFGUY and HORRORS OF MALFOPRMED MEN on Blu-ray. They are releasing an Akio Jissoji ATG film box set. I can't be anything but supportive of all that, especially since I don't see anybody else willing to touch these tit...

If nothing else, the Toei Channel version looks a lot better than my old VHS. I'd probably pick up a DVD release even if it's indeed just an inferior remake.

Who is this film even supposed to be for? The die-hard Wakamatsu fans are most likely disgusted by the slick commercial look of it and I just can't see the mainstream audience giving a shit.

And no, Sato hasn't died (as far as I know).
A lot can happen in the 5 months before the DVDs come out. Maybe Toei's higher ups know something we don't.

Morbid jokes aside, it's good to finally see some more catalogue releases from Toei. It's certainly been a while since the last batch!

Just realized that this will be a UK/US/CAN release, which indicates that Synapse no longer owns the US rights. Makes sense since they released it on DVD 10+ years ago and explains why they let go of their extras for the film.

Re: The Teruo Ishii thread

Did the Toei DVD really use a different scan than the Synapse one? If so, you're probably right but Arrow may be able to use Synapse's transfer as well, seeing how they must have made some sort of deal with them for all their extras.

Re: The Teruo Ishii thread

Holy Shit is the correct response. I appreciate that they are porting over all the extras from the Synapse release in addition to their own new content. Kind of doubt that this will indeed be a "brand new 2K restoration" though since Synapse already scanned it in HD in 2007.

Arrow Video have finally announced a new Toei/Fukasaku release and it's not the much-speculated upon Hokuriku Proxy War or Wolves, Pigs & Men but rather STREET MOBSTER 現代やくざ 人斬り与太 (1972).

Muse (Spain, 2017) BD - 2.5/5
Occasionally hilarious occult horror film about the Muses who aren't nice at all but actually kill people by whispering poetry. I'll say it must've taken some guts to make a film with such an absurd premise and play it straight.
