Muse (Spain, 2017) BD - 2.5/5
Occasionally hilarious occult horror film about the Muses who aren't nice at all but actually kill people by whispering poetry. I'll say it must've taken some guts to make a film with such an absurd premise and play it straight.

Cure (キュア) (Japan, 1997) BD - 4/5
I can't say I care too much about director Kiyoshi Kurosawa's current output but he was absolutely on fire in the late 90ies. This slow-burn horror thriller just oozes atmosphere and is among his best works.

Big Trouble in Little China (USA, 1986) - 2.5/5 Always put this one off because I thought it looked silly. And so it is. Some cool scenes, though. I had more fun with the 10 minute Carpenter interview in the extras where he's gloriously grumpy and not giving a single fuck, sharing his heartfelt opi...

Violence Voyager (Ujicha, 2018)

From the demented mind of Ujicha, director of 2014's BURNING BUDDHA MAN comes VIOLENCE VOYAGER and here's a first trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3LlYTMB6t4 Bobby and Akkun look for a secret base. They happen to find a mysterious amusement park, but someone attacks them suddenly and they g...

Downrange (USA, 2017) DCP 3/5 Ryuhei Kitamura's new English language film is very much a single-location flick with no story other than kids get trapped in the middle of nowhere and have to try to outwit a deranged shooter. The car crash is the first thing that happens, then there's a few minutes f...

The trailer is a very accurate representation of the film you get. It's very much a single-location flick with no story other than kids get trapped in the middle of nowhere and have to try to outwit a deranged shooter. The car crash is the first thing that happens, then there's a few minutes for cha...

A Quiet Place (USA, 2018) DCP 2.5/5 Surprisingly good big-studio horror flick that takes a simple premise and does some cool things with it. A small child getting killed in the first couple minutes and some other parts had me a little surprised later on when I found out this was a PG-13 in the US. ...

The nipple censorship notwithstanding these covers are a significant improvement over the eyesores that have previously passed as Happinet covers.

The irony is that Yakuza Apocalypse and Fury Road opened in Japan on the same day... and of course's Hardy's film wiped the floor with Yakuza Apocalypse. Another fun connection is that former Miike regular Riki Takeuchi dubbed Immortan Joe in the Japanese version of FURY ROAD. http://i67.tinypic.co...

Bonded by Sorrow / Rapist / Wanted: For Forced Entry (犯る男) 2016 DVD 3/5 Daisuke Yamanouchi has had a rough millennium so far. Having come to international attention with a couple late-90ies splatter flicks (RED ROOM, MUZAN E, GIRL HELL 1999) he's spent the last 20 years directing anything from TV e...

Re: Junk Head (Takahide Hori, 2017)

A glowing recent review states that the film is currently unreleasable outside of the festival circuit due to rights issues, which strikes me as bizarre considering it was all made by a singe dude over 7 years. Unfortunately, if you don't have a chance to see Junk Head at a festival, you basically j...

I thought this film was dogshit and one of the worst things Miike has ever put his name on but in case anybody was waiting until now for an English friendly BD release, Funimation is putting out a combo on June 5th:

Synapse/Impulse Pictures is doubling down on the women-in-prison pinku with the May 27th release of Koyu Ohara's FEMALE PRISONER 101: SUCK 女囚101 しゃぶる (1977) starring Naomi Tani. I think this is actually the second film in the FEMALE PRISONER 101 series, as Isao Hayashi's 女囚101 性感地獄 dates from 1976. ...

Ghostland aka Incident in a Ghost Land (2018) DCP 2/5 Latest film from Pascal Laugier, whose Martyrs (2008) had an interesting premise but not enough of interest to say for a full feature film. This new film is equally flawed. It starts with a close-up of a portrait of H.P. Lovecraft and even featu...
