HK release with English subtitles from Panorama Distributions on January 18th. Cat. III of course but I have serious doubts this will be uncut.

May The Devil Take You (Sebelum Iblis Menjemput) (Indonesia, 2018) [netflix] - 3/5 Timo Tjahjanto gets you to care for his characters, who are put in danger of losing their souls thanks to the greed of their father, in his first supernaturally themed feature since MACABRE. Tjahjanto's solid directi...

The City of Betrayal (裏切りの街) (Japan, 2016) [DVD] - 3.5/5 A 20-something slacker ( Love's Whirlepool 's Sosuke Ikematsu) who leeches off his hard-working girlfriend uses an online hook-up site to contact women and so meets a woman almost 20 years his senior. Their first encounter is awkward but they...

Re: Japanese cult cinema thread

One of the all-time great youth films, Miyoji Ieki's Love is in the Green Wind (恋は緑の風の中, 1974) , will finally receive a home video release from Happinet on April 2nd! Ieki's final film before his death in 1976 was never even available on VHS but was recently broadcast in HD on TV. Truly a marvellous...

Possum (UK, 2018) [amazon] - 4/5 Excellent slow-burn type film about an obviously disturbed man who returns to his childhood home and then spends most of the film trying to get rid of a fucked up spider puppet with a human head, while there's news about a teenaged boy having disappeared. Gorgeous d...

Re: Love's Whirlpool (2014) & Call Boy (2018) (Daisuke Miura)

This is an adaptation from Miura's own stage play The credits claim it was based on a novel by one Ira Ishida with no mention of a stage play. Looks like Miura adapted it for the stage first in 2016 and then proceeded with a movie version. Also of possible interest: there are a total of 3 "Call Boy...

Event Horizon (UK-USA, 1997) [BD] - 4.5/5 I don't think I've seen this one since originally catching it in a freezing cold theater in Valletta, Malta in the summer of 1997. Great production design, lots of glorious practical effects, very atmorspheric and - despite the legendary censorship cuts - s...

Call Boy (娼年) (Japan, 2018) [BD] - 4/5 Every bit as good as Love's Whirlpool (愛の渦, 2014) . Great acting, visually stylish, long sex scenes that remain surprisingly watchable because you are interested in and care for the characters and it goes to some pretty dark places along the way. Special props...

Under the Silver Lake (USA, 2018) [DCP] - 3.5/5 I don't think I saw a weirder film all year. Andrew Garfield plays an unemployed slacker in L.A. who's soon to be evicted from his apartment because he can't make any payments. He spends his days smoking, fucking and spying on his neighbors. When a yo...

The interesting thing is that the Fang Bing Bing character in the novel is Japanese. It's Li Bingbing in THE MEG and not Fan Bingbing (who was in IRON MAN 3 and one of the recent X-MENs). As far as I know they are not related. I can imagine if this film was made 15 years ago (it was first announced...

I only saw my first Mochizuki film, Minazuki, a few weeks ago. Won't be my last one! Really liked that one. Minazuki is indeed very good and has Eiji Okuda play a very different character than he does in the Wicked Reporter films. The only thing both characters have in common is that they're sex go...

The Meg (USA, 2018) [Flight] - 3/5 Jaws for today's kids: Statham vs. giant CGI shark. Very watchable nevertheless. It's a bit amusing how clearly this was aimed at the Chinese markets... the last 30 minutes in spoken mainly in Chinese! My #1 guilty pleasure this year, so I'd probably even rate it ...

The Devil's Doorway (UK, 2018) [BD] - 2/5 It's only on the rarest of occasions that I still bother with a "found footage" type horror film, seeing how the subgenre has become the go-to for untalented amateurs with no budget. This production got my interest because it proposes to have its footage fi...

Wicked City (妖獣都市) (Japan, 1987) [DVD] - 3/5 Horror anime misses its noir potential by being too fast paced and technically video-like; however, it's packed with impressively grotesque monster imagery and explicit sex. Yoshihiro Nishimura seems to have been highly influenced by this when he made To...

There is also a set with the Chiba STREET FIGHTER films coming out in the US the same month. From what I understand there is still some uncertainty if they will include the Japanese audio though.

Rope Hell (原作・団鬼六「やくざ天使」より 縄地獄) (Japan, 1978) [BD] - 2/5 Oniroku Dan S&M shenenigans slightly elevated by a yakuza plot, an over-the-top performance by Hitoshi Takagi and a surprisingly nasty scene in which Naomi Tani is forced to suck the stump of her former underling's finger! And finally, bottom of the barrel, Hell in a Bottle (1986) . The poster art is great, and indeed there is a girl in a bottle at the end, but otherwise this is just a series of cheap sex scenes, much more like an AV flick than a real Nikkatsu film. http://bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/upload/HungFist/...
