Peanuts (ピイナッツ 落華星) (Japan, 1996) [DVD] – 2.5/5 A minor action/yakuza comedy from Takashi Miike's early V-Cinema days. Riki Takeuchi and Koyo Maeda are the leads. They help a suicidal fish vendor who's up to his neck in debt to a yakuza gang and things escalate from there. It's a decent timewaster ...

Re: Classic Japanese Exploitation (pinky violence & pink)

I guess we should be glad the films are still legal. And I second the request for a continuation. I'm glad at least a few books like this exist, given the chronic lack of Interviews and commentaries on Japanese catalogue title releases.

This set is getting a "standard edition reissue" from Arrow US on October 29th. No mention of new transfers so expect the same old bullshit. And would you look at that new cover art! What the fuck is that?

In the Shadow of the Moon (USA, 2019) [netflix] – 1.5/5 I've been a fan of director Jim Mickle since MULBERRY STREET (2006) so it wasn't any fun to see him shit the bed with this netflix original. The film starts out as an alright mystery but drops the ball in the third act when it's revealed that ...

Scorsese by Phillips, for incels. Socially relevant, but too slick to have grit, too superficial to be genuinely challenging.

Festival Dispatch - Korean Excursion

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (곤지암) (Korea, 2018) [DCP] - 1.5/5
Found footage hijinks about some youtubers investigating a supposedly haunted (and abandoned) mental asylum for epic clicks. There was a lot of hysteric screeching which kept me mostly awake.

Ad Astra (USA, 2019) [DCP] - 3.5/5 I can't remember the last time I've been so torn about a movie. This is 75% beautiful, haunting, poetic, best space cinema in decades. And 25% Michael Bay action, as believable as Armageddon. What on earth were they thinking? It was a very troubled production, wit...

Now as for why they'd upscale a film from 2018 that no doubt is available in HD is anyone's guess.

Not a bad trailer, actually, in my opinion. A number of cool visuals and practical effects on display. Those were the best thing about the first film as well.

Seems like the film will hit American theatres long before it opens in Japan.
Well Go Usa will release the film in NY/LA on September 27, with an expansion planned for October 4. Does it even have a release date in Japan other than "2020"?
