Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of

I've totally given up on finding truth in info on HK movies. It's near impossible. The actual people involved don't even know what the truth is, how can you? Regarding Bey's book, I asked him that very question a few years ago, and he said that if he could get a publisher on board, he would do it. I...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of

He seems pretty inconsistent with his stories from various interviews throughout the years. I certainly remember catching several contradictory statements here and there, but that's true of most actors I guess. A little surprised that Craig Reid is that off on the info there. Always considered him o...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of

Im fairly certain that on the extra material for OHMSS it is stated (whether it's by GL himself or not I can't recall) that he had extensive Judo experience, and therefor handled the action scenes quite well. Strange if he has claimed to have no MA experience in another interview. Oh well.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out

China Syndrome made my top list for '79 (which is its year of release). Love that film. Fatal Attraction was never really my bag. It had some effective moments, but never made me care enough about any of the characters. Also, I find Glenn Close thoroughly unattractive and her character unappealing f...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of

Well, he's definitely suppose to be an Aussie cop, since the whole intro sequence is quite clearly in Australia. I've also tried to dig up more info on the whole Bruce Lee/Shrine of the Ultimate Bliss/Lazenby/Three picture deal mythos, but came up short. There are a lot of fun stories going around, ...

Re: Master's Top 10 Hollywood/English Films from 1930 to 201

I think some of the stuff you mention makes it more gritty than some of its contemporaries, which make it stand out. I like darker stuff when it comes to war films of this era, since a lot of them are straight laced, flagwaving hero tales. Sure, it has propaganda elements, but I feel it's better imp...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of

I'm thinking for the on location shooting they were relegated to a quick shoot. Most likely... and yet we're treated to the same drawn out travelogue sequence that we were subjected to in Duel of Fists and many other flicks shot in Thailand in this period. Yes, they have elephants and golden temple...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of

This film only really works for me in the HK scenes. Most of the Thai segment is pretty dull and feels positively disjointed from the rest. The HK stuff feels and for the most part looks like a period piece in classic GH style, and the Thai stuff is your basic campy 70's cheese..... it doesn't reall...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out

Just watched Body Double again. This film tears me in so many directions it's ridiculous. Some scenes, I clearly see what De Palma is going for, and others I have no fucking clue. Some scenes I love, and some I really hate. The whole Hitchcockian set-up, the voyeurism, the claustrophobia angle all w...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out

Like Soul Man a lot. And The Wraith is a fine piece of 80's B-movie cheese if you ask me. It has its problems for sure, but there's a lot to recommend. And Sherilyn Fenn is ridiculously bangable here.

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of

There are bits and pieces in both that I like. But given the talent involved, they are really disappointing efforts, for sure. Although Stoner at least has some thick 70's cheese going for it. Queen's Ransom has next to no redeemable qualities.

Man, Stoner is a hard watch. The only thing worth watching here is Angie VS Whang In Sik.... and that ultra quick cut of Lazenby backdooring Betty Ting Pei

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of

Im partial to thinking that it was Sammo's actual hair. Looks close to what he was sporting in Enter the Dragon. And yes, Whang In Sik is a beast. Can't think of a film that he was in, where he wasn't the best thing about it.....except for Way of the Dragon, of course, where he was not allowed to lo...

The first one (Story of Wong Fei Hung) is properly subbed, the rest aren't. Im blanking on the name of the one I watched, but it was not subbed.

Re: B&W Wong Fei Hung series Shaw Brothers connection?

Both of the ones pictured are from '57 I believe, though I just used those as examples. But you're right, the later WFH films from the 60's, where the Shaw studios were up and running, does not feature the SB symbol... of the ones i've seen. The studio use was júst an idea that popped into my head, ...

Re: B&W Wong Fei Hung series Shaw Brothers connection?

Shooting with sound is definitely a plus here.

I would still like to know to extent the Shaws were involved. Im guessing it was merely distribution. But some of the sets looks kinda Shaw-like, so perhaps they rented studio space.

Re: B&W Wong Fei Hung series Shaw Brothers connection?

I DL'ed all the ones Frank Bolte put up on youtube, but only watched one so far. If you're interested in HK cinema history and the progression of fight choreo, then I would recommend trying one. But the pace is slow, and so is the action for that matter. Plus, watching without subs is far from ideal.

B&W Wong Fei Hung series Shaw Brothers connection?

Can anyone tell me why the SB logo appears on the posters of some of the old B&W WFH films? I know they didn't produce them. But were they just distributing to various markets or did they rent out studio space or other involvements? http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm214/shingenken/HowWongFeiHungS...
