Re: The off-topic topic

I need to make a presentation about English literature (don't ask) next week. Gotta resist the temptation to include this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v716/HungFist/HungFist136/shall.jpg College sucks! Fuck education! What do you need all that crap for? People have been doing alright without ...

Re: The Tale of Iya (Rina Takeda, 169 min, 35mm)

This is great news! This is the movie I want to watch the most right now. Seems that Tetsuichiro Tsuta is taking huge interested in themes regarding the environment and man's tradition in connection to his habitat. According to AsianWiki, his previous movie, 'Island of Dreams', deals with the destru...

Re: Classic Japanese Exploitation (pinky violence & pink)

I guess you'll have to start typing in Japanese now, and use Japanese money transfer services to get those Japanese Exploitation movies. Or simply go directly to the stores and pay cash.

Re: Red x Pink (Girl's Blood) (Japan, 2014)

This market sucks. It's a modern Japanese Pink movie - of course there will be violence and some sex in it. And the sex is a central part of the story, as well , so taking it out undermines the movie. They should just have made the R18 cut to be the only cut, but I guess that would have made it hard...

Crazed Fruit (Japan, 1956) [DVD] - 3/5 The seminal Sun Tribe film that defined the rebellious Japanese post-war generation, caused a moral panic, and launched its controversial writer Shintaro Ishihara and his actor brother Yujiro Ishihara to stardom. To be precise, however, what the film really di...

Re: Hero (2002)

My point was just to say that these particular Wuxia movies have a transient quality to them. The fighting sequence in 'Hero' is purposely not meant to have a linear continuity - Jet Li and Tony Leung are expressing their sorrow for the sacrificed Maggie Cheung, and the sequence is meant to show us ...

The movie is of transient nature. They're all Buddhists; they don't care about linear continuity.

Re: Hero (2002)

Well, it's not really like Zhang Yimou is the first one to make so-called artsy-fartsy Wuxia movies - King Hu, Yimou's big influence, made the genre to be artsy-fartsy from the beginning with movies like 'Dragon Gate Inn' and 'A Touch of Zen'. Does the continuity of the placement of the characters m...

Re: Recent and not so recent Japanese dramas

I also recently watched Still the Water , which I thought was a nice little movie, as well. It has been talked about that the movie was directed by a female director, Naomi Kawase; although I don't know how relevant this is to the movie itself. I personally don't lay much emphasis on the gender of t...

Re: Recent and not so recent Japanese dramas

Finally got to watch My Man and Au Revoir L'été this weekend. It made for an interesting viewing contrast, since both movies feature Nikaido Fumi in the starring role. I thought My Man was alright. It does have beautiful visuals and it is slow-moving and manages to create an atmospheric tone, as far...

Re: Japanese Splatter and Zombies: Part Deux

But, getting back to Japanese Splatter, Yoshihiro Nishimura is one of the best at doing what he does, in my opinion. 'Tokyo Gore Police' is a brilliant splatter movie, with so many awesome things in it. The movie is just so stylized and refined, and it has great sense of humor, making it really fun ...

Re: Bruce Lee in New Guinea (Uncut)

I think 'Tower of Death' is lazier than 'Game of Death' in the sense that they had Bruce Lee die halfway into the movie so that they wouldn't have to cut in random Bruce Lee clips into the movie anymore . 'Game of Death' was just an excuse to make a whole movie out of some unfinished footage Bru...

Re: Bruce Lee in New Guinea (Uncut)

Well, technically, the movie is titled 'Bruce Li in New Guinea', and not so much Lee as in the Bruce Lee from 'Enter the Dragon'. Although, I would think it is safe to assume that the 'Bruce Li' title is there to have the audience instantly associate the movie with the Bruce Lee actor because Lee an...

That's actually my second favourite film in the series, after River Styx. The fight in the shrine is still shockingly violent. I should watch the whole series again. I haven't seen them since I showed selected entries to Heka back in 2011 when I was in Finland. Oh, the good old days  The first...
