Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Naked Poison 2 (2002, Hong Kong) internet 2/5 Because you demanded it! With nothing in common with the first one, other than a return of Sophie Ngan (and Co Co Chow), this story doesn't even follow any of the same ideas as the first, instead concentrating on some kind of Memento rip off, where Soph...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

As a long time comic book reader, I enjoyed it almost as much as the first. Cable (Josh Brolin) was cool as hell and Domino was hot ( ). I thought the jokes were funny, and the cameos good, but as a comic book reader and American film fan, maybe it was geared more toward that audience. Still...

Chungking Express (1994, Hong Kong) youtube 5/5 Every few years I watch this, usually when something triggers my memory of it. Like Valerie Chow in 'Freaky Story'. She plays the stewardess in this, the cop's girlfriend who leaves him, that has the bra and long airline skirt on in the flashback apar...

Re: DVD clear out. HK & some Korean and Japanese films

Hey,
Which DVD of Eastern Condors do you have, if its an HK release is it anamorphic?

I'm sure I remember seeing Sassy Girl years back (like in 2002 or so), really cute film :)

Deadpool 2 (2018, USA): 4.25/5

Very funny comic book/superhero parody, really enjoyed it - lots of in-jokes and fourth wall breaking, and the Bond-esque title sequence is brilliantly spot-on.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) (cinema) - 4/5 I think I understood this a bit better than the first time I saw it. The visuals, music and scope of ideas is just amazing. The ending shows David being "reborn" - I think? But slightly before that, what were all those trippy lights and coloured landscapes...

Magnificent Bodyguards (Lo Wei, HK - 1978): 3/5

Wacky period adventure featuring Jackie Chan, American indians, evil monks and music stolen from Star Wars, quite good fun.

Recieved a CD from Ebay but the case was cracked/damaged on both sides like someone had either been playing football with it or sat on it :( Maybe it had been damaged in transit.

Which one do you think represents the film best? The bright red blood seems at odds with the rest of the muted palette of the Arrow transfer :dontknow:
Maybe that was closer to how the film looked in the 70's, it's 45 years old not a modern movie

Lady Snowblood (Japan, 1973): 4/5 Very cool film, it's easy to see how it majorly influenced the Kill Bill films (main character tracking down multiple villains, story divided into 'Chapters', one scene in this film is very similar to Kill Bill's anime section, the asshole priest/teacher character, ...

Eraser: 3/5

Not among Arnie's best - or even best of that decade (1990's) but worth a watch, and I quite enjoyed it. There's some silly CGI including crocodiles (!) mixed in with old school shoot 'em up action.
The BD is literally barebones - no extras, not even chapter selection or a trailer.

Youth of the Beast (Japan, 1963): 4/5

Has a Yojimbo style story with some crazy moments and a super cool jazz score/soundtrack.

Red Sparrow (2018): 3.5/5

Intriguing mystery/spy thriller is a good watch but can get confusing at times. Ocassionally it's also a bit nasty.

101 Dalmatians (1961): 3/5

Middle tier Disney, the film suffers from limited, rough looking animation and too simplistic a story stretched out over 75 minutes. Nice jazzy score though, and I liked some of the jokes/references at the expense of TV of the time.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975): 4/5

Excellent drama movie, very darkly comic in places and disturbing in others especially the electric shock treatment and when Billy kills himself.
Why did the Chief kill McMurphy at the end? I thought he wanted to escape with him?

The Prestige (2006): 4/5 Atmospheric mystery involving rival magicians in the late 19th century/early 20th century, the performances are good, especially Hugh Jackman and Michael Caine, some of the twists were good though multiple use of people having twins feels rather cheap - I didnt spot that Ang...
