Killer Elite (UK/AU, 2011) [Netflix] - 3/5
Mediocre action mayhem elevated by an intriguing early 80s England setting and an unexpectedly good villain/opponent (Clive Owen). DeNiro is good, too. Supposedly based on a true story, possibly all made-up - that's just the way it should be.

While the Women Are Sleeping (女が眠る時) (Japan, 2016) [Netflix] - 2/5 Rarely do you see a potent thriller lose its way as badly as this Wayne Wang Japan entry does. A novelist and his wife run into a creepy old man (Takeshi Kitano) vacationing with a sexy teenage girl (Shioli Kutsuna) in a resort. Wha...

Re: Classic Japanese Exploitation (pinky violence & pink)

Thanks for posting those. So, they are doing airbrushing now? Seriously, for fuck's sake. Those women without nipples are disturbing. How are you supposed to explain to a kid why they have breasts without nipples? Wish they'd just slap some text or credits over the boobs (like Toei sometimes does) i...

Wheelman (USA, 2018) [Netflix] - 3.5/5 A getaway driver receives a threatening call while on a gig. Tightly paced at just 82 minutes and claustrophobically filmed almost entirely from inside the car, this is less an action film and more of a tense, well written thriller with a good leading performa...

Onsen osana geisha (温泉おさな芸者) (Japan, 1974) [DVD] - 1.5/5 The 6th and final Hot Springs Geisha film, somehow as tame if not even tamer than the 1968 Teruo Ishii original. This was directed by the walking definition of mediocre Ryuichi Takamori who sabotaged a whole bunch of Sonny Chiba films. Occasi...

The Outsider (USA, 2018) [Netflix] - 3.5/5 A highly entertaing twist to the usual yakuza film formula with Jared Leto as gaijin yakuza in 1950s Osaka and Kobe. The unusual protagonist adds a constant tension to a film that, with its depictions of Japanese yakuza, police and prison guards as corrupt...

Wicked City (妖獣都市) (Japan, 1987) [DVD] - 3/5 Horror anime misses its noir potential by being too fast paced and technically video-like; however, it's packed with impressively grotesque monster imagery and explicit sex. Yoshihiro Nishimura seems to have been highly influenced by this when he made To...

Hero (Hong Kong, 1997) [Netflix] - 3.5/5 Zany early 1900s Shanghai epic and Corey Yuen remake of Boxer From Shantung with fun action and awesome production values, maybe one of the last breaths of that 90s Hong Kong cinema insanity that was soon be lost. Takeshi Kaneshiro is the lead, Yuen Biao co-...

Re: Retro Cinemas and Cult Films in Japan

Also on my travels I stopped by in Cinema Vera . Unfortunately they no longer play double features. That beautiful, traditional system came to its end last summer. What we get now is a set of 5 or 6 films played every day in different order for a week. The prices went up as well as now you have to a...

Of course Lone Wolf was not the only thing I saw in Laputa Asagaya. I went there early in the morning to catch the entertaining 1957 Toho thriller The Decoy with Ryo Ikebe using his wife as a decoy to catch escaped prisoner Makoto Sato. https://sketchesofcinema.files.wordpress.com/2018/11/lap8.jpg I...

In search of a Lone Wolf It is no secret that Laputa Asagaya is my favorite movie theatre in Tokyo. I also love the Asagaya district. I was walking the streets one day and spotted something interesting: https://sketchesofcinema.files.wordpress.com/2018/11/lap1.jpg What's that, you ask? Could it be ...

The Lone Stalker (ひとり狼) (Japan, 1968) [DVD] - 3.5/5 Classic matatabi film with Raizo Ichikawa as a nihilist lone wanderer. The storyline is a bit too centred on exposing the main character's back story (as opposed to wandering) but the emotional climax is surprisingly powerful. As an added bonus th...

Two Champions of Shaolin (Hong Kong, 1980) [Netflix] - 2.5/5 Watchable but instantly forgettable Chang Cheh / Venoms film with decent fighting, great closing, worthless storyline and the Venoms being their usual uncharismatic selves. Skin Trade (2014) **½ Dolph Lundgren and Tony Jaa team up to wipe out scummy human traffickers. Better than usual cast, lots of crunchy action. Closer to a theatrical feature than most DTV movies. It was a theatrical release in Japan. I remember seeing it in cinema and enjoying it, though it could'...

Annihilation (USA, 2018) [Netflix] - 3.5/5 Interesting, visually striking science fiction horror ultimately falls a little short. For an intellectual film it features odd lapses in logic (e.g. the heroines are nearly killed by a giant river creature; the next morning they go downriver without a wor...

The Viper Brothers: Extortion Plot for 3,000,000 Yen (まむしの兄弟 恐喝三億円) (Japan, 1973) [DVD] - 3/5 Part 6. Opium and the Kung Fu Master (Hong Kong, 1984) [Netflix] - 3/5 Good kung fu, bad comedy and some truly cringe worthy acting. Rolling Thunder (USA, 1977) [DVD] - 4/5 Excellent, gritty action thriller about two Vietnam vets who return home after enduring years of torture in Vietnam.
