Re: Retro Cinemas and Cult Films in Japan

Tokyo programmers have a major boner for Meika Seri . There's a retrospective for her, this time in Shin Bungeiza, and it's the third Seri retro in in 4 years. 2014: Meika Seri retrospective in Laputa Asagaya (Tokyo) 2016: Meika Seri retrospective in Cinema Vera (Tokyo) 2018: Meika Seri retrospectiv...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Tropical Inferno (Switzerland, 1976) [DVD] - 1/5 Another Jess Franco WiP film. Compared to his earlier movie Barbed Wire Dolls this one tones down the porn and replaces it with very nasty sexual (and non-sexual) torture. Don't be fooled by the cool title either: most of the film is set indoors; onl...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Barbed Wire Dolls (Switzerland, 1976) [DVD] - 1/5 I was under the impression that this was supposed to be a real movie, but it turned out to be a porno (and not even a good one). Or at least I think it was a porno; the Japanese DVD I rented was so badly fogged that I couldn't tell for sure. It was ...

Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS (Canada, 1974) [DVD] - 2.5/5 Mean spirited exploitation film mixes soft core sex with sickening human experiments that dominate most of the running time. Not exactly an enjoyable film, but certainly a memorable one. It's interesting to see how it differs from similar Japane...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Bullitt (1968-USA) **½ Fresh and edgy at the time, this cop thriller now seems somewhat sluggish. Not a bad film, but best recommended to Steve McQueen fans. That was my first ever dvd purchase, the Warner snap case, back in 2000. Still have it. Caged Heat (USA, 1974) - 1/5 This frustrating piece o...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Savage Sisters (USA / Philippines, 1974) - 1.5/5 Tame American International / Filipino actioner isn't really a WiP movie, but places it's protagonists behind the bars for the second quarter. Were there enough hard edged exploitation scenes it might set off the sloppiness, but instead we are treate...

Black Mama, White Mama (USA / Philippines, 1973) - 3/5 Though not a Roger Corman production, this is essentially a superior version of The Big Bird Cage (1972) with similar cast and story (two female inmates chained to each other on the run, one of them affiliated with a revolutionary movement) but...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

For reference, my old review from last year The Big Bird Cage (USA / Philippines, 1972) [DVD] - 2.5/5 Philippines set WiP film with a tongue in the cheek tone; part 3 in Roger Corman's "trilogy". Entirely watchable and rather entertaining, but once the film is over you're not left with much. As expl...

Women in Cages (USA / Philippines, 1971) [DVD] - 3/5 The second and best film in Roger Corman's WiP "trilogy". Pam Grier co-stars not as prisoner but sadistic lesbian head prison guard with a discipline dungeon designed for aesthetically pleasing torture, giving the film a Teruo Ishii kind of swing...

Tomerareru ka, oretachi wo (Koji Wakamatsu biopic by Kazuya Shiraishi) (2018)

Koji Wakamatsu may be dead, but Wakamatsu Production is coming back to life... with a film about Koji Wakamatsu. Kazuya Shiraishi (The Devil's Path, Dawn of Felines, The Blood of Wolves) helms,a Arata Iura will play Wakamatsu, Mugi Kadowaki also stars. Coming sometime this fall. https://www.youtube....

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Decided to familiarize myself with WiP films... lets see if anything good comes out of this... The Big Doll House (USA / Philippines, 1971) - 2/5 A relatively standard WiP film, misses its potential by being shot in the Philippines yet taking place almost entirely within four walls. The action packe...

Re: Japanese cult cinema thread

I thought I had posted this already... True Account of Hishakaku - A Wolf's Honor and Humanity (実録飛車角 狼どもの仁義) (1974) Interesting although not especially visceral de-romantization of the Theatre of Life saga for the jitsuroku era. Bunta Sugawara portrays "Hishakaku" as a short tempered, violent yakuz...

I extracted all the TV and VoD reviews to a new thread: Rare Japanese Cult Cinema reviews (No DVD / BD) . The rationale was that some of you guys might get frustrated with me posting so many Japanese TV / VoD reviews of films that can't be purchased from abroad in the JP Cult thread, and I didn't wa...

The Return of Daimajin (大魔神) (Japan, 1966) [Hulu] - 3/5 This is a bit of a rehash of the first movie, with a similar story told with slight modifications. This time an evil lord attacks a peaceful village by the sea whose inhabitants worship a stone god statue on a small island. Directed by samurai...

The Thing (USA, 2011) [Hulu] - 2.5/5 Unnecessary, but entirely watchable prequel focusing on Norwegian camp. Great locations, nice to see actual Norwegian (well, Danish too) cast as Norwegians, and there's a wonderful tie up with the original film at the end. They also came up with a clever new "cr...

The Arrow is like a faded version of how it should look like. I don't own it, but I think if you enhanced the color and blacks a bit, you'd probably get an acceptable presentation. The internet is full of all kinds of self-declared experts who claim to know how Japanese films are supposed to look li...

The colours on the BD looked rather subdued to me (I watched the Arrow version). It's regrettably colorless, yes, but still much preferrable to the Criterion transfer which looks like it was supervised by Michael Bay for MTV... it's an absolute disgrace. - http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=...

The American (USA, 2010) [Hulu] - 4.5/5 Quiet, lonely hitman (Clooney) retreats to a small Italian town by the mountains and starts working on a new assignment. Atmospheric, beautifully filmed and impressively low key film which reminded me of the most meditative of Italian action films and western...

Bushido: The Cruel Code of the Samurai (武士道残酷物語) (Japan, 1963) [DVD] - 2.5/5 Repetitive and overlong, but powerful criticism of the Japanese social hierarchy and the unreasonable side of the traditionally romanticised bushido code. The film chronicles eight generations of Iigura family men (cleverl...
