Re: Born (リボーン) (Japan, 2016) [DCP] - 2.5/5 There's a great sense of disappointment when a film is so keen on its original concept that it forgets some of the basics of action filmmaking. It took a while, but I finally got to see the film. Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (USA, 1986) [DVD] - 2.5/5 Part 6 tries to pump more "fun" into the series, and occasionally succeeds at it (e.g. the sex scene, a very cool Alice Cooper theme song). Unfortunately the most painful moments tend to be those with humour rather than violen...

I don’t know when they started to show pubic hair in Japanese cinema Japanese cinema: mid 90s. I think A New Love in Tokyo (1994) was the first, but I'm not 100% sure. Foreign cinema in Japan: 1985 Tokyo International Film Festival was probably the first time (e.g. the film '1984', but the films we...

Re: Classic Japanese Exploitation (pinky violence & pink)

Anyway, let's be thankful it's a mediocre flick that got cancelled and not one we were really looking forward to getting a BD. Makes me all the more grateful that we got Red Violation (even if the transfer left something to be desired). I didn't dare the celebrate until the day it was out as I fear...

Zatoichi and the Doomed Man (座頭市逆手斬り) (Japan, 1965) [BD] - 3/5 Part 11. This is one of the lesser Zatoichi films for lacking interesting supporting characters, and for featuring a rather lame comic relief who steals Zatoichi's identity and goes around pretending to be him. Even then, this is an enj...

The Machine Girl (Japan, 2008) contv.com - 3/5 This is one film that I always wanted to like more than I could. I've always had two major problems with Iguchi's films. The 1st one is the humour, which is just too dumb for my liking, and the 2nd one is the underwhelming technical execution (e.g. I r...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I like all of the films in the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, especially the 2nd one, but in all honestly I feel most of Fukasaku's other films from the same era are better (e.g. Graveyard of Honor, Yakuza Graveyard, Cops vs. Thugs, Hokuriku Proxy War).

Score (Japan, 1995): 3/5 Entertaining actioner, felt like a hyped version of 90's B action from the US, if that makes sense. The DVD is pretty bad though. I think it's a rather wonderful film. It's of course low budget Tarantino/Woo/Lam rip-off action trash, but executed with such insane energy that...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Very much agreed. I think there was an era in Japanese cinema in the early 70s when much of the cinema had a bit of an identity crisis. They were coming from the romantic and heroic 60s (if you allow a huge generalization) and heading towards the gritty and exploitative 70s. That transition took a f...

I feel pretty much the same. So far my favourites are The Tale of Zatoichi, The Tale of Zatoichi Continues, Zatoichi the Fugitive, Zatoichi on the Road, Zatoichi's Revenge, Zatoichi and the Chess Expert, and Zatoichi's Vengeance. Least favourites: Zatoichi at Large, Zatoichi in Desperation, and Figh...

What Video on Demand service do you use? Amazon Video and DMM and DMM . Be warned that most films on DMM are VHS era masters, though it doesn't really matter for films that have never received a better master. And you'll probably need a proxy service to access them from outside of Japan (payment is...

Zatoichi's Pilgrimage (座頭市海を渡る) (Japan, 1966) [BD] - 3.5/5 The 14th film in the series promises a more spiritual approach with Zatoichi deciding to visit 88 shrines to atone for the lives he's taken. It is a bit of a shame the film does not ultimately pursue this path, but instead throws Zatoichi i...

Cool... I'll figure out how to navigate it. Those release dates listed are great! If you click on the release date you'll get a(n almost) complete list Japanese films released that year. Since studios opened their own films as double features back then (or triple, in case of Roman Porno) you can ea...

Her 1st movie, actually... I have a lazy habit at times of using imdb.com for Japanese movies, despite the fact that I know they aren't as on target with their information (They list Ninkyô hana ichirin aka Chivalry of One Lone Flower with Tatsuya Fuji as her first movie). For Chinese films I use h...

I wonder if Suzuki originally had Miki Sugimoto in mind for this role and she turned it down - being early 1974 when she was at the end of her exploitation queen run - and Yumi Takigawa was chosen (in only her second movie) for the slight resemblance she has to her... Her 1st movie, actually. Accor...

Zatoichi's Vengeance (座頭市の歌が聞える) (Japan, 1965) [BD] - 3.5/5 Part 13. It's not where you go, it's who you meet along the way. This routinely plotted (small town terrorized by an evil gang) but otherwise well written entry is vitalized by a set of excellent supporting characters. Zatoichi crosses pat...

Couldn't agree more with this, it's definitely in the top5 when it comes to the Zatoichi series and for my money it features Katsu's best performance as the titular masseuse. Which ones would you consider the best films in the series? How about the worst? I'm a bit embarrassed to admit but I'm seei...

I'm a little embarrased about my memory now. In my defence, old ladies lacking eyesight were probably less common in Finnish TV than topless young ones back when I was a child. I remember we had this shampoo commercial with a topless girl bathing in the sea which aired daytime.

Doc Hollywood (1991-USA) *** Amiable comedy about big city doc Michael J. Fox stuck doing community service in small southern town. Light and whimsical, a pleasant will to pass the time. I loved this film when I was a kid. Haven't seen it since then. All I can remember is the scene with the old lad...
