Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Japan's Underworld History: Blood Feud (日本暗黒史 血の抗争) (Japan, 1967) [TV] - 2/5 Just how many times could Toei tell the same story of a small gang made of goofballs rising from the ruins of WWII Japan? It's a formula that was done to death in the 1960s until the ultra gritty jitsuroku genre pumped som...

Re: Love's Whirlpool (Ai no uzu) (Daisuke Miura, 2014)

Miura has a new movie coming out in April, Shonen (娼年), about a male prostitute. Based on his own play, which was based on a novel.

Always interested in a new Miura movie, but why does this look like crap visually???

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I'm no expert on any of this, so insight such as this on it is always greatly appreciated. I'd be curious to read more on the genre and understand it - it's evolution, what made it popular, how that popularity reflects from Japanese culture... Are there any books out there (in English) that are a g...

Isn't the dildo bit from Kinjite? You're mixing up Bronson! :D duh yep. i posted that in the early hours this morning after a night in the boozer. In my defence i've been on a Bronson marathon lately and watched the German BD of Kinjite just the other day. :| Alien Resurrection (USA, 1997) [B...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Did it have subtitles? On DVD, if I recall correctly, I added them myself. 35mm, no. An influence upon what would become the Pinky Violence genre Pardon me for the self-righteous rant that follows... I mean this by no offence, and I'm referring mainly to other writers whom I've seen say the same th...

MAJISUKA GAKUEN 4 マジすか学園 4 (Japan, 2015) Rakuten VIKI 4/5 (though incomplete) I was aware of this series (well, the earlier seasons) about a decade ago when I was crazy about Sukeban Deka (the 3 series, not the films), Rebellion League of Girls in Sailor Uniform and Shojo Commando Izumi, but just I...

Re: Classic Japanese Exploitation (pinky violence & pink)

Welcome! The old Happinet releases are fine. The more recent ones (the last 18 months or so) are a bit of a mixed bag. Some look better than the others. Many of the transfers look boosted in terms of color and contrast. It's probably Nikkatsu's doing, not Happinet. I'm mostly referring to screencaps...

Re: Sonny Chiba Mega Review Thread

Why doesn't the 'Japanese version' of KB Vol.1 seem to available on Blu Ray? Just seems to daft to me :? No idea. Perhaps Universal was too cheap/lazy to scan the Japanese print. It's really frustrating though, especially to Japanese audiences I'd guess. They've been watching the Japanese version f...

Massacre Gun (みな殺しの拳銃) (Japan, 1967) [VoD] - 2/5 Hitman Joe Shishido and his yakuza brothers, hothead Tatsuya Fuji and failed-boxer-in-love Jiro Okazaki, turn against their rotten boss and try to make money on their own. A rather tiresome Nikkatsu yakuza film that smells of a programmer picture. It...

Sonny Chiba Special: Part 66 (1/2) Kill Bill Vol. 1 (USA, 2003) [DVD] - 5/5 Out of Tarantino's masterpieces, this has the most nostalgia value for me for having come out when I was a high school kid - the perfect age to be exposed to an audio-visual genre film wonder full of samurai swords, Japanes...

The Yagyu Clan Conspiracy (Japan, 1978) [DVD] - 3.5/5 Toei resurrected the samurai film genre with this epic, which served as their answer to the waning popularity of karate and yakuza films. It was the start of a new era of bigger budgeted Toei films, and even got released it as a standalone featu...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Daiei was a rather conservative studio whose main source of income was samurai and jidai geki films. They did have a few oddball directors like Masumura who did "whatever" they wished, and there was obvious commercial pressure to flirt with exploitation cinema, but most of the time you cou...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

The Church (Italy, 1989) [VoD] - 3/5 Stylish, moody horror film suffers from a messy script that fails to establish who is the main character, and features too many supporting characters doing nonsensical things. Even then, there are many good scenes and a fascinating theme. The church setting is w...

Akumyo: Tough Guys (Japan, 2001) [DVD] - 1.5/5 A remake of the 1961 yakuza classic "Bad Reputation" which starred Shintaro Katsu and Jiro Tamiya. The new version casts Koji Matoba and Mikihisa Azuma, two gentlemen of far lesser reputations, in the lead roles. Sonny Chiba appears as a yaku...

I saw this last year in Yubari. I seem to have forgotten to write a review so here goes. Tonight She Comes (USA, 2016) [Yubari Fanta] - 2.5/5 What if after decades of masked killers in horror films, we had one who doesn't wear anything at all? And she was a young woman! A rather typical modern genre...

Fighting Fist (Japan / Kong Kong, 1992) [DVD] - 2.5/5 Cheap but relatively watchable martial arts thriller is one of Sonny Chiba's few directorial efforts. The Japan - Hong Kong co-production probably originated from Japan where low budget V-Cinema films were the new big thing, and many of which we...
