Danger Pays (危いことなら銭になる) (Japan, 1962) [DVD] - 1.5/5 Nerve wrecking idiot comedy with Joe Shishido, Hiroyuki Nagato and Kôjirô Kusanagi goofing around after stolen money and master counterfeiter. Production design and Shishido's car are admittedly cool. + Sonny Chiba Special: Part 71 Violent Street...

Umemiya and Chiba share the top billing; however, it is Umemiya who gets the juicier role with mo...

Violent Street (Japan, 1963) [35mm] - 3/5 Decent yakuza lieutenant Ken Takakura tries to maintain peace between gangs while rivals and reckless subordinates (Shinjiro Ebara in full Hiroki Matsukata mode trying to make money with boxing and dirty gambling) give him hard time. This was one of the rel...

Bakamasa Horamasa Toppamasa (バカ政ホラ政トッパ政) (Japan, 1976) [Netflix] - 1.5/5 Light-on-action businessman type yakuza film was a few years ahead of its time in that it is hopelessly dull. Bunta Sugawara leads a pack of three criminal/businessman/no goods. Nothing interesting happens, in fact, nothing mu...

Cool to hear. I just ordered the set.

It seems the Cat Girls are the only ones that are world premieres on home video... am I right?

Re: Love's Whirlpool (2014) & Call Boy (2018) (Daisuke Miura)

I knew about the novel, but assumed the film was based on the stage play since Miura did that first, and I believe the male star was in it too. I could be mistaken. I didn't know there were 3 novels though, nor about the manga.

Holy shit! I just found out via Mr. Mike Haack that Nikkatsu's Cat Girl Gambling (1965-1966) trilogy came out on BD in France last year.

Yep. Saw The Breakfast Club for the 1st time and decided to see the other Hughes films on Netflix as well.

Also seen Planes Trains a long time ago. I recall it being very good.

Sixteen Candles (USA, 1984) [Netflix] - 3.5/5 John Hughes' debut film about the lovely Molly Ringwald with a crush on a boy she's afraid to talk to, and a geek (Anthony Michael Hall) trying to score with her, takes turns being dumb and totally adorable. The shower boob scene took me by a surprise. ...

TV Review / Not Available on DVD Impact: Prostitution Capital (衝撃!売春都市) (1975) G-man Tatsuo Umemiya infiltrates a narcotics/prostitution racket in a poorly crafted, but astonishingly on-your-face morality lesson. Structurally it's all over the place with zero charisma gangster Jo Shiraishi getting ...

Shoplifters (万引き家族) (Japan, 2018) [Flight] – 4/5 Perhaps Koreeda’s most accessible film with heartfelt, uniformly excellent performances by every central player. The characters, the direction and the performances are so good, so entertaining yet socially conscious that you don’t realize until halfw...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I really, really, really need to get caught up on Miura's two films from 2016: The City of Betrayal (裏切りの街) and Someone (何者) . Someone is a pretty standard mainstream youth / shukatsu (job hunting) drama. It's not bad, but you wouldn't know it's by Miura if his name wasn't in the credits. Haven't s...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

My favorite film of his is The Outer Way (外道, 1998) , which I wouldn't hesitate to include in any list of the best 10 Japanese films of the 90ies. That one's OOP too but, quite unlike the Wicked Reporters, it sells for about 50 yen so you probably can find it easily enough should you be so inclined...

R.I.P. Masashi Ishibashi

The man who played villain in almost every Toei karate film ever made, who gave Chiba the opponent he needed and helped choreograph films like The Street Fighter, and who according to a story used to drop by at Masutatsu Oyama's dojo on his way home as guest instructor, is gone. He was 85 years old ...

Flight viewing: part 1 The Meg (USA, 2018) [Flight] - 3/5 Jaws for today's kids: Statham vs. giant CGI shark. Very watchable nevertheless. I didn't even know about those Wicked Reporter films. Seems like the DVDs are long OOP and not available for rental.

I only saw my first Mochizuki film, Minazuki, a few weeks ago. Won't be my last one! Really liked that one.

I'm in complete agreement about the Roman Pornos. I'd love to see the Sex Rider sequel surface some day. Maybe I should ask Toei Channel  As for the Delinquents, it's been a decade since I saw those two. I rated them higher but I also recall the 2nd film being the weakest. The 立看 poster is one ...

Two movies I watched just before a 10 hour flight  Non-Stop (USA, 2014) [Netflix] - 4/5 Dynamite Liam Neeson thriller never lets go once it gets going. Cool. Thanks. Small correction, though: it's parts 3-8 that are getting low priced in February. 1&2 already went low before, I think.

In addition to the parts 1-6 above, I've also seen part 8 (not very good). Got part 7 in the digital pile waiting for viewing.

The Young Vagabond (Hong Kong, 1985) [Netflix] - 1.5/5 The youth of Beggar Su (Gordon Liu) depicted as a b-grade kung fu comedy.
