Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Snake & Crane was my first non-Bruce Lee HK movie, and it's always had a nostalgic place in my heart, charmingly mad as it is. It's probably the closest Jackie actually came to being Bruce Lee in the Lo Wei films. Up to this point, Lo Wei cast Jackie as an underdog who must learn kung fu from a supe...

To Kill With Intrigue (1977, Hong Kong) youtube 2/5 I'll be honest - when Hsaio's (Jackie Chan) father says, "It's the Killer Bee Clan.", I chuckled out loud. And some of this dialogue is really bad, even for 70's HK movies, and I don't only mean "I'm just a beast!". Jackie Chan is a character here...

Time between the Death Blow and the 'The End' credit appearing!

Anyone that has Shaolin Wooden Men that can check and time that for me, it'd be appreciated - the version I was watching cuts out...
All the versions I've seen end with Jackie preparing to become a monk.

Snake In The Eagle's Shadow (1978, Hong Kong) youtube 3.5/5 A lot is made of the comedy used in Snake In The Eagle's Shadow and how it started Jackie on a path to fame and fortune (It did), but I think as much as that it's the heart and humanity of this movie that make it unique and special as well...

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

Considering he had five films out in '76, it's kind of surprising that only one Jackie film saw a HK release in 1977 - To Kill With Intrigue.

I'm very fond of Shaolin Wooden Men - it's a charming film with it's heart in the right place. The old VHS I had was missing the entre first reel!

Killer Meteors definetly grew on me, but it seems that just as Lo Wei kept miscasting Jackie, he did Wang Yu a disservice here by casting him in a romance/intrigue filled melodrama which doesn't suit Wang Yu's style at all. The fights also rely too much on wirework and Wang being acrobatically doubl...

Hand of Death shows Sammo learning how to Shaolin style kung fu on film, just as Lady Whirlwind shows him taking baby steps at chroeographing empty handed combat. Great theme tune!

New Fist of Fury (1976, Hong Kong) youtube 1/5 At 21-22, Jackie still looks really young, but it's not entertaining at all to watch him flail around and act like he doesn't know kung fu through 3/4ths of this movie. Nora Miao is her usual stiff self, and other than wincing everytime a Chinese chara...

I'm one of those who hated The Fearless Hyena, although it's been yonks since I've seen it. I consider it a failed post-Seasonal experiment which Jackie corrected with The Young Master. And I disagree about Sammo Hung; he's an excellent lead, with plenty charm and charisma. My problem with Fearless...

Re: Arrow's Female Prisoner Scorpion BD Set: An Utter Disaster?

I agree.

Arrow's takeover of the boutique market is a tad worrying. They cram their schedules with "limited edtion" releases, cauasing panic buying and hoarding, commandeer the US and UK markets...and then don't fix their screw ups.

Very much rock bottom for the genre - a dreary bore starring some poor chap named Elton Chong.

I really have a weird urge to watch Cyprus Tigers. Was on holiday in Cyprus the year the film was made. Had terrible heat stroke.

Raging Rivals (1982) AKA Hard Bastard Hwang Jang Lee plays a trumpet player in a travelling medicine show...no seriously. Decent fights, but lame "comedy", tedious "drama" and an unconvincing period setting do little to help. Gam Kei-Chu, the formidable headbutting antagonist of Shaw's King Boxer, i...

Re: Early Bruce Li and other Taiwanese indies - where did they play?

Alpha is an interesting one. HK based, all their productions seem to be a) Taiwan and b) no recorded HK release. Then Jimmy Shaw gets his name plastered over the VHS releases of the Jackie Chan/Lo Wei films as though he made them!

I've often wondered where HK ends and Taiwan began - it seems HK producers made films in Taiwan as standard, but does that make them Taiwanese?

Early Bruce Li and other Taiwanese indies - where did they play?

Since Markway is persona non grata on Kung Fu Cinema's forums, I thought I'd post it here This applies to many other indies besides, but I thought I'd focus on these. Before signing with Eternal in 1976, Bruce Li made a bunch of movies for Taiwanese based producers, including Jimmy Shaw's Alpha Supe...
