Loophole (1980) ***
Struggling architect Martin Sheen is lured into helping crook Albert Finney break into a London bank vault.
Thoroughly watchable caper, ending's a bit pat though.

The Equalizer 2 (2018) **½
Serviceable, if overlong sequel pits deadly Denzel against a team of rogue CIA assassins.
Slick and violent, but the script is run of the mill, and doesn't bear scrutiny.

Virus (1998) ** Electrical pulses take over a Russian ship and turn its inhabitants into mutant robots, or something like that. Silly stuff wastes a decent cast, but some may find it amusingly bad. Skyscraper (2018) ** Dwayne Johnson and some Duct Tape star in this preposterous action blockbuster in which a one-legged security expert has to save his family from foreign bad guys in a towering inferno. Pot-boiler kills time for sure, but this makes the Die Hard series look like gritty realism in...

Mission: Impossible (1996) ***
The sequels may have surpassed this in terms of action sequences,
but in terms of spy thriller this one remains the best.

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

The 'Highbinders' cut never got released. Some of the deleted scenes are on the DVD, IIRC. Not a good film, but surprisingly I didn't hate it. It's hard to hate even Jackie's poorer films. Only time I've liked Evans in a film was in a little seen thriller called Freeze Frame. And I wish Claire would...

Bridge of Spies (2015) ***
Good cold-war drama from Steven Spielberg with Tom Hanks reliable as usual.

Enigma (1982) **½
Another cold war spy drama. Quite good, but needs a bit more suspense.

Re: What asian film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

What is it you actually liked about 'Who Am I?' Everytime someone spoke a line of dialogue in that movie I winced in pain. Yeah, the acting in WHO is atrocious, but then Rush Hour has Chris Tucker.... I enjoyed the action, stunts, locations, humour, personality. It's simple stuff, sure, but probabl...

Shining Through (1992) **½ Most critics didn't like this WWII spy melodrama, but I found it enjoyable enough. The hokey script's occasional holes and flashback structure (not to mention a rather unnecessary narration) detract from the more successful pulp elements and costly period atmosphere. Melan...

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out of 5

I re-watched that a few weeks ago. I`d go for the same rating (3/5), though partly for different reasons. Loved Bronson and thought the fist fights were very good, but Coburn`s character got really irritating towards the end. In good writing conflicts arise despite characters doing their best, not ...

Hard Times (1975) **½
Walter Hill's directorial debut effectively casts Charles Bronson as a taciturn street fighter in 1930s New Orleans.
Nice period atmosphere, but the characterisations are thin, and the fist fights pretty dated now.

Mad Dog Time (1996) ** Self-consciously arch gangster comedy; good cast, but quickly becomes repetitive and tiresome. Dirty Work (1998) ** Revenge is business is this occasionally amusing, but unambitious comedy. Street Smart (1986) **½ Almost a really good drama, but just misses the mark. Morgan Fr...

The cinema version was only a few seconds longer than the PG-13 version.

It's been suggested that even more cuts were made before that.

Mission: Impossible II (2000-USA-Germany-Australia) **½
John Woo puts an authorial stamp on the M:I series with his trademark stylishness and flashy action sequences (which are too often held back by the PG-13 rating). Not a fan favourite, perhaps, but I still enjoy it.

Yeah, the Hui Brothers comedies were also popular throughout the decade, but until '77 there was precious little in the way of Cantonese martial arts.

Shaws were a little behind the curve compared to Golden Harvest, as they were in most things.

Mystery Road (2013-Australia) **
An Aboriginal cop investigates murder and drug corruption in the Outback.
Well-photographed, but very ponderous (and faintly pretentious) thriller
never bothers to solve its initial mystery or any of the sub-mysteries that crop up.
